Yancy Sibrian '14
Yancy Sibrian '14 traveled about an hour each day over the summer from her Corona home to get to her internship at One Police Plaza where she worked in the Domestic Violence Unit of the New York City Police Department. Answering phone calls, sending emails, delivering mail, and reviewing domestic violence reports and U-Visas were just some of the duties Sibrian performed on a typical day. This was her first internship.
"I became interested in the Criminal Justice field as soon as I took my first Criminal Justice course at QCC," says Sibrian. She admits, however, that she was initially intrigued in the field because she was a fan of the popular TV show C.S.I. Countless episodes later, Sibrian is now pursuing her dream of becoming a Criminologist.
Sibrian decided to attend QCC because it was the most economical choice for her family and is close to home. She was also attracted to the Criminal Justice major which is a Dual/Joint Degree Program between QCC and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, her dream school. She plans to transfer upon completion here at QCC next year.
Sibrian says the NYPD Partners in Education Internship came about after she was referred to Ms. Grossman, the Internship Coordinator for the Office of Career Services. With the assistance of Ms. Grossman, Sibrian was able to earn academic credit for her work at NYPD's headquarters.
"My experience with the Career Services Office has been great so far," says Sibrian. "I am very happy that they were able to provide me an opportunity like this." She noted that through her experience as a working member of the Domestic Violence Unit she learned that there is more to the job of a policeman than just being on the streets. "There are people behind a desk working hard as well, to maintain order and keep every family safe."
Sibrian hopes her next internship will be in a court house where she can work as a translator. "As long as I can learn something and it can help me to achieve my goals, I wouldn't mind volunteering," she says. "It's actually fun!"
