What is Student Government?

Student Government is an entity that was created to provide students the experience and training in the democratic form of government. This group of students are charged with the duty of continuously expanding and coordinating a program of student activities, to stimulate interest and support in the development, assessment and execution of educational, social, cultural and recreational programs, to develop communication amongst students, administration and faculty. In effect, to represent the best interests of the general student body.

The Student Government Association (SGA), also known as the QSA (Queensborough Student Association) Executive Board, is composed of the following voting members - President, Executive Vice President, Administrative Vice President, Programming Vice President, Vice President for Evening Students, Vice President for Part-time Students and Treasurer.

                                      Student Government (SGA) General Information

 

Executive Board Position Summary

  1. President: Is the leader of Student Government, chairs weekly Board Meetings, and is the main Spokesperson for SGA at events.
  2. Executive Vice President: Second-in-command after the President. Leads Student Senate Meetings which take place bi-monthly (during Club Hours).
  3. Administrative Vice President: Helps establish and maintain Student Clubs. Chairs the Ratification Committee, which approves Student Clubs.
  4. Programming Vice President: Plans social, educational, and cultural programs. Chairs the Activities Program Council (APC) which plans college-wide student events. Meets with Club Vice Presidents bi-monthly (during Club Hours).
  5. Treasurer: Keeps track of the SGA Budget and chairs the Allocation Committee, which allocates budgets to Student Clubs and Groups. Successful completion of BU-101 (Principles of Accounting 1) is required to hold the position.
  6. Vice President for Evening Students: Supports evening students and serves on the Activities Program Council (APC) which plans college-wide student events.
  7. Vice President for Part-Time Students: Supports part-time students and serves on the Activities Program Council (APC) which plans college-wide student events.

 

Individuals running for an Executive Board position can simultaneously run for the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee.  A separate Application must be filed to run for the additional position.

While holding Office during the fall and spring semesters, members of the Executive Board need to:

  • Commit to ten (10) hours of office hours per week. The ten (10) hours are flexible and work around class/work schedules.
  • Attend weekly SGA Board Meetings.
  • Attend Academic Senate, Association, Auxiliary, CAPC and Tech Fee meetings to advocate for the student body. These Meetings occur sporadically and often work around students’ schedules.
  • Be free during Club Hours (Wednesdays, 12:10-2:10 p.m.) for Meetings and Events.

 

Executive Board members on average devote about 12-15 hours per week to their SGA responsibilities during the fall and spring semesters.

QSA Position Summary

  1. Student Senator-At-Large (20 positions available): Supervise the decisions of the QSA Executive Board. Serves on Academic Senate committees and SGA committees. Attends bi-monthly Student Senate Meetings held during Club Hours.
  2. Allocating Committee (3 positions available): Approves Student Club Budgets. Meets on an as needed basis during the fall and spring semesters.
  3. Judicial Board (5 positions available): Ensures QSA Constitution compliance. Meets only if an SGA Constitution interpretation issue arises.

 

Individuals running for a QSA position can run for multiple positions (Student Senator-At-Large, Allocating Committee and Judicial Board) simultaneously. Additionally, they can also run for the Academic Senate position (Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee). A separate Application must be submitted for each additional position sought.

 

Academic Senate Position Summary

  1. Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee (6 positions available): Decides on disciplinary cases involving faculty and students. Meets on an as needed basis throughout the academic year.

 

Individuals running for the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee and no position listed under QSA can run for an Executive Board position. A separate Application must be submitted for the additional position sought.

The time commitment and responsibilities required for both QSA and Academic Senate positions are significantly lighter than those of Executive Board positions.

Requirements to Run for and Maintain Office

  1. Must be a registered student at Queensborough Community College.
  2. Must be matriculated at Queensborough Community College.
  3. Must have completed a minimum of 12 college credits and/or equated hours.
  4. To run for President must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 with at least a 12-credit QCC course load while holding Office.
  5. To run for Executive Vice President, Administrative Vice President, and Programming Vice President must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with at least a 12-credit QCC course load while holding Office.
  6. To run for Treasurer must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 and the successful completion of BU-101 (Principles of Accounting 1) prior to running. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with at least a 12-credit QCC course load must be maintained while holding Office.
  7. To run for Vice President for Part Time Students, Vice President for Evening Students, QSA and the Academic Senate Positions must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with at least a 6-credit QCC course load while holding Office.

Executive Board, QSA and Academic Senate positions serve for one year, starting July 1st and ending on June 30th the following year.
