Commendation and Recognition for Excellence in Service Award (C.A.R.E.S.)
For Improved Success, Retention and Graduation
Queensborough Community College
Student success is the responsibility of every member of our campus community. I have met many faculty and staff who go out of their way to help students stay engaged and obtain the support they need in order to be successful. Their exemplary and caring approach has inspired me to create an award to recognize those who make an important difference in our students' lives.
One way to measure student success is through retention rates, which look at the number of first-time freshmen who return the following fall semester, and the 3-year graduation rates for first-time freshmen. We can all work together to increase our retention and graduation rates each by 2%, which is something not that far out of reach. Improving the rates by 2% would increase the number of students registered next Fall (2022) by 50 students and increase the number of students who started in Fall 2019 and graduate next year by an additional 60 students. Together, we can do this!
The President's Queensborough Community C.A.R.E.S. Award honors faculty and staff who advance this goal and whose efforts and achievements demonstrate an exemplary commitment to our students, service beyond what is expected, and an attitude of caring and selflessness.
"Critical to our retention efforts is making every experience for every student a positive and supportive encounter."
Queensborough, ranked one of the top community colleges in the country, is working to ensure that more students complete their degrees on time.
Retention
The retention rate for our Fall '20 first-time freshmen is 59%. This means that 59% who enrolled in Fall ’20 were registered for classes in Fall ’21.
Moving the retention rate from 59% to 61% for the Fall '21 first-time freshmen cohort will increase the number of students who are still registered next fall (2022) by 50 students!
Graduation
Our 3-year graduation rate indicates that 29% of first-time freshmen who began in Fall '18 graduated within three years.
Moving our 3-year graduation rate from 29% to 31% will increase the number of students who started in Fall '19 and graduate this year by an additional 60 students!
