College Discovery ST100 – Intro to College Life

Course Description
This ST-100 course is designed to provide a toolbox for new students to transition from high school to higher education. The first module is intended to teach students the historical context of Opportunity Programs, and the implications of these programs in the City University of New York (CUNY), State University of New York (SUNY), and across private colleges in the state. A signature component of ST-100 is the building of community among newly accepted college students within the College Discovery (CD) and SEEK programs of CUNY. In the end, our hope is to engage students in learning, and to provide the initial skills necessary to be successful in completing a college degree. In particular, to provide a mindset for completing their associate degree in two years with an eye towards pursuing a bachelor’s degree upon transfer, and all while maximizing career building and effective decision making.
Course Objectives
This ST-100 course will allow students to:
- Gain an understanding of and appreciation for Opportunity Programs
- Understand the importance of adopting a learning mindset
- Take advantage of the actionable counseling, tutoring, and goal-setting outcomes CD provides
- Review and adapt short- and long-term academic planning
- Explore career resources and choices
- Learn the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning modalities to prepare them for their future college courses
Rules of Conduct
- This is an online virtual experience; students are expected to be self-paced
- Completion of this course is mandatory for all new CD students in CUNY
- Participation is expected in every module
- Respect of your peers and instructor(s) is expected
Course Requirements
You will need the following to access the online materials for this course:
- A CUNY Login credential to enable you to login to Blackboard, where course materials are kept.
- A device (computer, laptop, tablets, smartphone etc.,)
- Access to the Internet
- A recent version of a web browser (FireFox, Google Chrome or Safari recommended)
This course will be held synchronously and asynchronously. We will meet live in the virtual classroom, using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. You will also have assignments to complete offline (at your own pace, asynchronously) to post by the due dates indicated on this Syllabus. To succeed in this course, you will need to devote at least 2 hours per week to the required reading, viewing, and assignments.
