Teaching Philosophy

Students bring to the classroom a lifetime of experience with communication and stories, but they often cannot see how this experience connects to writing and literature. I see my role in the classroom as activating and extending this knowledge in the context of what we are studying. As we write and study literature, my courses seek to develop students’ rhetorical judgment, use of evidence to make arguments, and capacity for critical reflection.

While most of us attend college to prepare for a future career, I hope students also leave my courses with an appreciation of the many wondrous things there are to study, contemplate, and learn about in a human life.

Interests & Activities

I live in New Jersey with my wife and daughters. When I am not teaching or writing, I spend my time enjoying my family and the outdoors.
