Teaching Philosophy:
I have been teaching at City University of New York since 2008. Before teaching at QCC, I taught at Brooklyn College and York College. I also worked at Borough of Manhattan Community College, as a cooperating advisor with the CUNY Start Program. In my years of teaching, I have taught a variety of courses. I have taught first year composition, advanced research writing, critical thinking, as well as literature courses. I have also taught remedial reading and writing to Division 1 student-athletes at a non CUNY college.
I believe that an important part of teaching college students is creating an environment in the classroom where the students feel both connected to the world, and free to express their thoughts. I keep this in mind when I design my courses. Incorporating the present day world into the classroom (even if the class is reading a novel written in the 19th century), I believe, helps prepare students for life off-campus. It also encourages them to add their voice to a larger dialogue, which will hopefully make them feel like active participants in the world, rather than hopeless observers.
Research/Pedagogical Interests:
Developing methods to help bridge the learning gap between high school and college for the first-year student who has entered college underprepared.
