List of Bylaws charges and notation of “completed” or “not completed” with reasoning for incomplete items. Include statistics: number of appeals, acceptances, denials. Compare statistics to year previous

The Committee on Admissions shall consist of six (6) members of the instructional staff and three (3) student members who shall participate and vote only on matters of policy.

The Committee on Admissions shall:

  1. Formulate and recommend to the Academic Senate matriculation standards governing entrance of students to the various curricula and programs at Queensborough Community College.
  2. Formulate and recommend to the Academic Senate matriculation standards governing re-entrance of students to the various curricula and programs at Queensborough Community College.
  3. Consider appeals for matriculation and make decisions in accordance with Board of Trustees policies.

All the above were "completed".  According to the Committee's minutes on October of 2023, the members discussed the most recent change with the Academic Fresh Start (AFS) which was approved by the Academic Senate.  The change in this policy allows students to apply into the AFS program after 2 years (reduced from 4 years) of not attending a higher education institution.

Regarding appeals, the committee reviewed 168 applications for readmissions for the 2024 academic year (an additional application was reviewed by the chair due to it coming in later and was approved).

94 were reviewed (73 approved and 21 denied) for the Spring 2024 semester.

74 were reviewed (67 approved for 7 denied) for the Fall 2023 semester.

Continue process of streamlining online application procedures and report progress to the Senate in May 2022.

This recommendation has been completed.

The online application procedure seems to be working well. Students who are eligible for the Academic Fresh Start Program are forwarded to the proper office.  There are no issues to report here.

Summary of actions not covered by above

The committee has been asked to write the annual report for the academic year of 2022-23.  Given that the current chair was not a member during that time, undersign will work towards gathering information to create this annual report.

When the new chair was elected, she requested the following for clarification and streamlining:

  • write up an addendum for the committee - approved by members and posted online in May 2024.
  • review all documents (e.g., GPA calculator) members are provided for each applicant - done.
  • discuss decision making process (what to consider: GPA, accumulated credits, student statement, supporting documentation, etc...) when reviewing student cases - done.
  • in addition to giving a vote for each applicant, members are encouraged to provide comments related to their vote -done.

Over the summer, we continued to work on streamlining.  Thank you to Kristen Hoffman who created a google document for members to use, which makes our work more efficient.  Thank you, Kristen.

I will like to thank Charissa Che for serving as Secretary and posting all the minutes.  I will also like to thank all of the former and current committee members for their time on this committee and for their thoughtfulness in reviewing each application and providing feedback on their decisions.

Committee recommendations for upcoming year

Here are some items that the committee may address in the coming year:
  • On the Returning Student  Applicaton for Dismissed Students online -nowhere is it stated that upon their return, they are restricted to take up to 6 credits for their first semester back.   Look into, if possible, to add this information for full transparency.
  • Look into, if we can add information about the Academic Fresh Start program on the Re-admit webpage.  Is it possible to add a blurb about the benefits of the Academic Fresh Start program for those students who have been dismissed and are ready to return.
  • Lastly, this past year we had several applicants with high attempted credits and very low GPAs?  Let's work on creating a recommendation/policy where we can avoid students getting into this predicament.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jannette Alejandra Urciuoli, Ph.D., LCSW

Associate Professor, Chair of the Admissions Committee
