Course Description in college catalog:
This course is an introduction to Chinese language and culture designed for students who have not learned Mandarin at home. Students will develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin, and explore aspects of culture in Chinese-speaking countries. Both the pinyin Romanization system and characters will be introduced. Weekly listening, speaking and viewing activities online or in the language laboratory are part of the course.

Course-specific student learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- produce the basic “pinyin” sound system, the tones and the intonation patterns;
- provide basic information about yourself, your classmates, family, friends and hobbies;
- participate in simple conversations on everyday topics, such as greetings, family and hobbies;
- express preferences, likes and dislikes;
- read and write simple texts on above-mentioned topics.

Your speaking skills will be assessed by evaluating how readily and appropriately you answer in a question/answer or role play situation, including how well you pronounce Mandarin sounds and how well you apply the rules of Mandarin grammar.
Your listening ability will be assessed by evaluating how well you understand auditory messages such as questions or short dialogues.
Your reading skills will be assessed by evaluating your understanding of simple passages about familiar topics.
Your writing skills will be assessed by evaluating how accurate, grammatical and comprehensible your writing sample is. You will be asked to write a short description or dialogue.
