This course is designed for students of Chinese heritage who have some listening and speaking skills in Mandarin or other Chinese dialects. The focus is on reading, writing, and grammar, along with improvement of oral communication skills.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. produce the “pinyin” sound system, the tones and the intonation patterns;
  2. provide basic information in Mandarin about yourself, your classmates, friends, family, hobbies, etc.;
  3. participate in conversations on everyday topics, such as greetings and introductions, family, making appointments, etc.;
  4. read and write simple texts on the above-mentioned familiar topics;
  5. become familiar with a variety of cultural information as presented in the textbook and provided by your instructor.

Methods by which student learning will be assessed and evaluated; describe the types of methods to be employed; note whether certain methods are required for all sections:

Your speaking skills will be assessed by evaluating how readily and appropriately you answer in a question/answer or role play situation, including how well you pronounce Mandarin sounds and how well you apply the rules of Mandarin grammar.

Your listening ability will be assessed by evaluating how well you understand auditory messages such as questions or short dialogues.

Your reading skills will be assessed by evaluating your understanding of simple passages about familiar topics.

Your writing skills will be assessed by evaluating how accurate, grammatical and comprehensible your writing sample is. You will be asked to write a short description or dialogue.
