Course Description in college catalog:
This course will continue to develop students’ communicative competence through the study of grammar, acquisition of new vocabulary, and practice of the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. Cultural material will be introduced at an appropriate level in order to foster students’ understanding and appreciation of the culture of Chinese-speaking countries. Weekly listening, speaking and viewing activities online or in the language laboratory are part of the course.

Course-specific student learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- read linguistically non-complex authentic reading material by providing, in oral or written form, the main idea and supporting details;
- formulate opinions and/or suggestions, in oral and/or written form, on selected issues;
- summarize a narrative text, or create their own;
- accomplish socially more complex communicative tasks, i.e. accepting or declining an invitation;
- produce more accurate sound with improved tone distinction and the prosodic traits of Mandarin.
Methods by which student learning will be assessed and evaluated; describe the types of methods to be employed; note whether certain methods are required for all sections:
Students’ speaking abilities will be assessed by evaluating their degree of comprehensibility, and fluency, and the appropriateness of their lexical choice in completing communicative tasks or oral narrations/presentations.
Students’ listening comprehension abilities will be assessed by their degree of understating listening practices, such as a dialogue about the weather.
Students’ reading skills will be assessed by evaluating their understanding of passages on familiar topics.
Students’ writing skills (including knowledge of grammar) will be assessed by evaluating the level of comprehensibility and lexical/grammatical accuracy of their written texts consisting of descriptions, narrations, or summaries.
