Course Description in college catalog:

This course aims to enhance students’ understanding of Chinese society and modern Chinese literature through the analysis of a series of essays and a short play. The emphasis is on improving students’ reading and academic writing skills through critical analysis, class discussions and writing assignments related to the readings.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. familiarize themselves with works written by several influential Chinese writers and intellectuals such as 魯迅 and 林語堂;
2. do textual and critical analysis of works by the same or different authors;
3. familiarize themselves with some of the sociological, philosophical and cultural issues presented in modern Chinese literature such as readings by 梁實秋.

Students will be evaluated by:

1. how clearly and effectively they communicate using appropriate conventions of language such as grammar and punctuation
2. how well they develop their writing assignments that present a focused response with coherent connections;
3. their degree of understanding of the readings through summary and written/oral discussion of issues at hand.
