Course Description in college catalog:
This course aims to enhance students’ understanding of Chinese society and modern Chinese literature through the analysis of a series of essays and a short play. The emphasis is on improving students’ reading and academic writing skills through critical analysis, class discussions and writing assignments related to the readings.

Course-specific student learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- familiarize themselves with works written by several influential Chinese writers and intellectuals such as 魯迅 and 林語堂;
- do textual and critical analysis of works by the same or different authors;
- familiarize themselves with some of the sociological, philosophical and cultural issues presented in modern Chinese literature such as readings by 梁實秋.

Students will be evaluated by:
- how clearly and effectively they communicate using appropriate conventions of language such as grammar and punctuation
- how well they develop their writing assignments that present a focused response with coherent connections;
- their degree of understanding of the readings through summary and written/oral discussion of issues at hand.
