Queensborough Professors Lead International Conference on War and Sexual Violence
Dr. Sarah Danielsson, Associate Professor in the Department of History and Dr. Frank Jacob, Assistant Professor in the Department of History organized an international conference that was held during the week of April 22. The International Conference on War and Sexual Violence, co-sponsored by the CUNY Academy for the Humanities and the Society for Military History, took place on April 28 and 29 at the Graduate Center. Over two days scholars across disciplines from the U.S., Germany, France, Italy, China, Israel, the Netherlands, and Armenia presented incisive papers on art, philosophy, history, law, literature, sociology, political science, and geography. The topics covered various historical periods around the world: the Jewish and Armenian genocides, the Japanese occupation of China, the American occupation of Okinawa, the Guatemalan genocide, the Colombian conflict, and the Russian Civil War.
The presenters provided current research on historical events that still reverberate throughout modern discourse and geographical landscapes. The conference was attended by many students who benefited from the scholarship of faculty from around the world. Organizers of the event are working on the publication of an edited volume that will contain a selection of the papers presented at the conference.
