Anthony Blanco Named “Player of the Year” by the CUNYAC and MCU 2016 Community College Men’s Soccer All-Stars
After leading his team to an undefeated season in CUNYAC play at 3-0, Forward Striker Anthony Blanco was awarded Player of the Year by CUNYAC and MCU 2016 Community College Men’s Soccer All-Stars. He was previously named a 2016 NJCAA Region XV DIII Men's Soccer First Team All-Star.
In addition, Zef Kabashi was named the Coach of the Year after leading Queensborough to a 7-3-1 record overall and an undefeated regular season in conference play at 3-0. The Tigers have won 7 CUNYAC Community College Men’s Soccer Championships since 1987.
It was while in Italy that Blanco discovered his passion for soccer, the country’s most popular sport. He lived there with his family for many years before he decided to return to the states to, in his words, ‘embark on the journey of college’. He settled in the Bronx, and began looking at CUNY community colleges that might be a good fit for his interests.
“I was interested in QCC because it is known as the top CUNY college for soccer. Also, I heard good things from other QCC students about the schools’ diversity, its beautiful campus and student activities.”
And it was the College’s diversity that Blanco pointed to when noting what made the Tigers so special, “Our team is made up of athletes from many different backgrounds who bring their unique styles to the game. I’ve really enjoyed playing in this exciting way because it 'keeps you on your feet!’”
Blanco also described the gratitude he feels toward Coach Kabashi for his success on the field and in the classroom. “Coach inspired me to be the best athlete I can be and to place equal value on my studies.”
Blanco is in his second year at Queensborough and plans to obtain his Associate degree in Business Administration before moving on to a four-year college to continue his studies.
