Tune in Live! For Election Night Coverage on QPTV Featuring Queensborough Professors Gail Lewis and Dr. Peter Bales
QPTV will host a special evening of live election night coverage on Tuesday, November 8, from 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
The live show, which will be aired on channel 34 in Queens, will be co-anchored by Gail Lewis, Lecturer in the Department of Speech, Communication and Theatre Arts.
“It’s exciting to have an opportunity to utilize my years of broadcasting experience to report on such an historic national election from a local point of view,” said Professor Lewis. “Coverage will include an examination of the local and national races, with guests including politicians, local leaders and civic experts.”
Professor Lewis is collaborating with the Political Science Department in the production of the live broadcast, which will include an appearance by special guest Dr. Peter Bales, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences. Dr. Bales will offer commentary on the workings of the Electoral College.
“I’m delighted to collaborate with Peter for this coverage. He is uniquely qualified to explain the tabulation of Electoral math, while adding pertinent historic references.” said Professor Lewis.
As Dr. Bales explains, “The most common misunderstanding people have about the election process is that you’re not directly voting for the President or the Vice President, you’re voting electors. Each state’s electoral value is based on its population, so Idaho and North Dakota don’t carry nearly as much value as states with a higher population, such as Texas or California.”
He added, “The Electoral College was established as a compromise between Congress and the popular vote in a presidential election. The Race is to win states to get to 270 electoral votes.”
