Queensborough Student among Selective Group Participating in 2017 Mayor’s Office Summer Internship Program

Published: July 31, 2017

Yi Han, ’17, who graduated from Queensborough Community College this past spring with an A.A.S. degree in Office Administration and Technology, is  participating in the 2017 Mayor’s Office Summer Internship Program.

Assigned to the Office of Special Projects and Community Events, Yi Han’s responsibilities include scheduling guest speakers, volunteering for Randall’s Island Urban Farm, and taking part in Mental Health First Aid training. Components of the internship provide connections to coursework, career possibilities, and also gaining knowledge in City government.

“This internship experience reinforces my belief that involvement in the community is extremely important. It has also made me further appreciate the City’s amazing diversity and strengthened my empathy for people who are vulnerable.”

Yi Han, who emigrated to the U.S. from China in 2010, understands the daunting challenges of learning English. When she enrolled at Queensborough in 2014, Yi Han said she was “afraid of talking and public speaking.” But after studying English in the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) at Queensborough, she could get work-study assignments on campus in the Foreign Language Office and Academic Computing Center, and take advantage of opportunities for jobs in the City. “Even though my English still needs improvement, I have improved a lot over the past three years.”

Yi Han made the Dean’s list five semesters and became a member of both Phi Theta Kappa (Lambda Sigma Chapter) and Alpha Beta Gamma. In addition, she completed two Honors Projects and presented "Meditation Could Improve Mental Health" at the 2017 Honors Conference. Last year Yi Han was very active on campus. In addition to being a successful full-time student, she participated in the Business department’s Business Bowl Competition, presented diversity projects in her Marketing Class, and was President of Friends of Falun Gong Club. She continues to volunteer for non-profit organizations and Asian-related events.

All of these factors, along with the strong support of her instructors, played an important role in being selected to participate in the Mayor’s Office 2017 Summer Internship Program.

Yi Han, who will return to Queensborough in the fall of 2017 to pursue a second degree in Business Administration, has been awarded a second internship. The 2017-18 internship, called CUNY Cultural Corps, is under the partnership between CUNY, New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and The Rockefeller Foundation.

She plans to transfer to Baruch College in the spring of 2018 to major in Marketing Management.
