Queensborough’s Newly Launched A.S. in Public Health Program Receives National Recognition

Published: July 07, 2017

The League of Innovation in The Community College has awarded Queensborough Community College the 2017 Riegelman Award for Excellence in Public Health and Health Navigation Education in Community Colleges.

This prestigious national award recognizes Queensborough’s newly launched Associate of Science degree in Public Health. The program offers students a challenging educational experience with courses in the fields of biology, statistics, epidemiology, nutrition, general education and public health education. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in public health that prepares students to pursue further education in baccalaureate programs in Public Health related fields, or as entry-level professionals in a variety of workplaces including public, private, and non-profit organizations.

“Public health education is centered on improving and safeguarding the health of communities and populations. The Associates degree curriculum of Public Health at Queensborough features a superior blend of biology and health education courses to deliver exceptional education to our students, preparing them for public health workforce demand, locally and nationally,” said Dr. Anuradha Srivastava, Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences and Geology at Queensborough and Director, A.S. Public Health.

“We want students to have outstanding academic opportunities and be a part of a growing field for the improvement of individuals, communities, and society,” said Dr. Andrea Salis, Co-Director, A.S. Public Health and Assistant Professor, Health, Physical Education and Dance at Queensborough Community College.

The program has a transfer agreement with Hunter College’s B.S. degree program in Community Health, an accredited program of the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). Students who enroll in the A.S. Public Health degree program are part of the Queensborough Health-Related Sciences Academy.  The Health-Related Sciences Academy, along with the Department of Biological Sciences and Geology and the Department of Health, Physical Education and Dance, advises and mentors students on their curriculum and about opportunities for transfer to four-year institutions.
