Celebrated artist’s universal installation: CC Yang at Queensborough Community College
“I am tiny in this world,” artist Chin Chih Yang (CC) declares. “But the monumental work in this exhibit is universal in its message.”
A contemporary, New York-based multidisciplinary artist, Mr. Yang’s latest installation, new works and live appearance at QCC’s Art Gallery invites us to respond to world conflicts, natural disasters and the twists and turns of modern communications that chip away at our identity. The exhibit, Reclaiming the Vision: CC Yang, will open tomorrow, September 5 at 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a performance by the artist beginning at 6:00pm.
Using recycled material and natural resources that intertwine the past with the present, the Taiwanese-born sculptor, painter, weaver and multimedia artist’s show is far reaching – from the smoldering Amazon to a deconstructed car accident.
“It’s about human-made and nature-made disasters and our relationships to them. These two themes are core to my work,” Mr. Yang explains, taking a quick break as he sets up his show in the QCC Art Gallery space.
A key exhibit is a metaphor for global conflict: flags of multiple countries; for example, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iraq and France –are tied intricately into shapes which Mr. Yang likens to the legendary, intractable Gordian knot, which is only untied or resolved by bold action.
“Mr. Yang captures our complex relationships with nature and with each other,” said Faustino Quintanilla, Executive Director of the QCC Art Gallery. “He is a renowned champion of public art and we are very proud that he has selected Queensborough as a venue to share his vision with our diverse college community and beyond.”
Yang’s exhibition speaks volumes about pollution and environmental disasters, begging the viewer to be aware and reflect on his or her duty and responsibility to care for and maintain earth.
The artist will sign his displays with an oversized hand-made brush made from reclaimed items.
