The Doors are shut, but the Show Will Go on: Queensborough Offers a Virtual Tour of Works by Nearly 80 Art Students
The Department of the Art and Design are proud to present the Juried Student Exhibit 2020. Included is the digital version of the show including videos from digital art students.
Nearly 80 student artworks, representing greater participation in recent years from all disciplines-- particularly video and digital animation--will be featured online.
“Though the Gallery will be empty of people, we have the opportunity to take the exhibit online to the community and its individuals. Fine art can be transformative and is such a needed positive experience in these trying times,” said Professor and Chairperson Kathleen Wentrack, Art & Design.
Professor Annemarie Coffey, Art & Design, reflected on the present conditions that are far from those present when these works were selected, and first created by the students. “COVID-19 has wrought change so radically paced and extreme that none of us has gone unaffected.”
She continued, “Each of us looks for a way to cope, steel against the anxiety of isolation, grieve our losses, direct the lost and reach out to the mired. But mostly we survive, because despite flaws in the system our nature wills it. Ironically spring, seemingly nonplussed, trumpets its blossoms, greens the fields, and warms even as it lengthens days. I can't help but recognize these young artists are very much like spring; willful, inevitable in their growth and embracement of life. So I invite you to view, take refuge, laugh and celebrate our students: Megan Groll's “single twirling lady”; Sierra Slotnick's “bird now ascends in triumph”; appreciate Christine Jansen's prescience in her urging, and finally let Shuaige abate all of our nightmares.”
Deep appreciation goes to Professor Kenneth Powell and Jin Hee Choi, who orchestrated and composed the show's online presence. Gratitude is extended to all the faculty and staff of the Department of Art & Design, the QCC Art Gallery and Queensborough's Office of Marketing and Communication for their support.
