NYC's New Mayor Attended Queensborough
Statement by Chancellor Matos Rodríguez on the NYC General Election Results
“The City University of New York congratulates one of its own, Eric Adams, for prevailing in the New York City mayoral election on Tuesday and for making good on his prediction in 2015 when he passionately told the graduating class at Medgar Evers College that he would one day become mayor.
“We also commend the other CUNY graduates, including Jumaane Williams who prevailed in his citywide re-election and Vanessa Gibson, who made history. At a time when a top priority facing our elected leaders is to ensure an equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, we applaud these CUNY alumni for their commitment to public service and their inclusive, focused vision for the city. We are honored to have played a role in their journey to becoming city leaders. We often say that CUNY's students are our future; it can sound like a truism, but the outcome of this year's citywide elections shows us just what that can mean, and how much it matters.
“Mayor-elect Adams, who will be the City's second Black mayor when he takes office in January, attended three CUNY colleges, Queensborough Community College, New York City College of Technology and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and holds a degree from the last two. When he's sworn in, Adams will become the first CUNY alumni mayor since Ed Koch, who was a City College of New York graduate. We look forward to working with him and his administration in the coming years to advance CUNY's mission.
“Public Advocate Williams is a two-time graduate of Brooklyn College. Councilmember Gibson, a former Assemblymember who will become the first woman to serve as Bronx borough president, earned her Master's in Public Administration from Baruch College.
“In congratulating the winners, we also note the historic nature of yesterday's races and the progress made by women, particularly in the City Council, which ushered in its first-ever female majority. Congratulations to those who are making the Council even more inclusive, diverse and representative of the city.
“Finally, we are proud of CUNY's efforts to educate its community about the new ranked-choice voting system during the NYC primaries in June, and to mobilize students, faculty and staff through its CUNY Votes campaign. CUNY colleges also served as voting sites for early voting and the general elections. We thank our community members for their participation in our electoral system and for their support of leaders that support public education and have pledged to work toward an economic recovery that is equitable and inclusive.”
