200+ Queensborough Students Benefit from Community’s Thanksgiving Generosity
New York State Senator John Liu, Assembly Member David Weprin, and Council Member Barry Grodenchik were among local officials and community members joining Queensborough Community College President Dr. Christine Mangino on Wednesday, November 24, to distribute donated groceries and fresh turkeys to more than 200 Queensborough students in need.
Queensborough’s midday Thanksgiving Food Distribution was part of the College’s larger 2021 “Give Thanks, Give Back” annual #CUNYTuesday drive to raise funds, which support the provision and delivery of emergency goods and services to members of the Queensborough community.
“It is more important than ever to give thanks and give back, especially during these difficult times,” said President Mangino.
“Food insecurity is a heartbreaking problem for far too many of our students who work long hours to try to cover their living expenses while attending classes. They rely on the generosity of others.”
Queensborough students accept generous Thanksgiving donations, including fresh produce and turkeys, from the community and Queensborough Community College’s Food Pantry on Wednesday, November 24.
Holiday Farms in Bayside, Queens, generously donated perishables and non-perishables to students -- including fresh holiday pies, stuffing, and fruit and vegetables. Grand Insurance Agency and Whitestone Auto Center also partnered with Queensborough to donate fresh turkeys.
“We are a community who cares deeply about the success of every student. Thanksgiving is an ideal time to give back, and we are grateful to our community partners who recognize that students cannot feed their minds on an empty stomach,” said Queensborough Vice President Di Dio.
“Events such as this go a long way in supporting and inspiring them to stay on track, focus on their studies, and pursue their dreams of earning a college degree.”
The College is also grateful for the support provided by East West Bank.
“We firmly believe that our investment in students is an investment in our communities because they will be and are the ones powering our great city and state,” said Dennis Chuang, Senior Vice President, and Consumer and Business Banking Regional Director at East West Bank.
