Professor Emeritus Jackson Lum, Engineering Technology Department at Queensborough Community College, and Mrs. Muriel Lum
Twenty-five years of making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of Queensborough Community College students
“We both work extremely hard. There is a reason for that. We both experienced extreme hardships. We have been driven all our lives to compensate for those hardships and they are what inspired us to establish scholarships for students with financial needs.” Professor Emeritus Jackson Lum and Mrs. Muriel Lum
Professor Emeritus Jackson Lum taught in Queensborough’s Engineering and Technology Department for 20 years and then went on to found Logic Controls with his wife Muriel Lum. The company is renowned as a leading provider of Point of Sale (POS) system software products and PC-based peripherals. As a professional engineer, Jackson Lum holds 26 approved patents for point-of-sale related products.
Early in his career as a specialist in thermal mechanisms at RCA Corporation in Camden, New Jersey, he met Muriel while she was a student at City College of New York. They married and settled in Queens, near Queensborough Community College where Jackson Lum’s teaching career began.
Jackson Lum and Muriel Lum immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong. Their journey reflects the journey of so many Queensborough students who have come to the United States in search of a better life for themselves and their families through education.
It was this understanding that prompted Jackson Lum and Muriel Lum to establish scholarships for Engineering Technology students and for students studying English as a Second Language in the Port of Entry program. And for non-heritage speakers, they established the Chai Ho and F.Y. Chiu Scholarship in honor of Muriel’s parents to encourage and reward full-time students to study Chinese languages and learn more about Chinese culture. In loving memory of Jackson Lum’s father, a long-time gourmet pastry chef at Queensborough, they established the Harry Lum Endowment so that students could enjoy complimentary pastries.
Most recently, they have pledged a major gift to award scholarships to Queensborough’s nursing students. In honor of their generosity, the nursing computer lab has been named The Jackson and Muriel Lum Nursing Resource Lab.
Over 25 years, Jackson Lum and Muriel Lum have donated nearly one million dollars to Queensborough Community College.
