Army Veteran Latisha Pearson Shows Up for Fellow Student Veterans So They Can Push Through for Themselves
Today we salute Veterans Day, a time to pause, celebrate, and honor all service members for their willingness to sacrifice their lives to serve the good of others.
Army veteran Latisha Pearson is a sophomore majoring in criminal justice at Queensborough. She is also a peer mentor in Queensborough’s Office of Military and Veterans Services, a program which connects former members of the armed services with fellow student-veterans.
“I’ve received a lot of guidance and access to great resources that have made a big difference in my experience at QCC including someone to talk to when life is happening.”
In August Latisha, who served in the military from 2016-2022, learned there were not enough veteran peer mentors. She stepped up, wanting to pay forward the support she had received and help others make the transition from military to civilian life.
“I know from experience that the transition can be difficult. It is rewarding to help support new student-veterans connect and meet new people.”
Latisha’s advice to student veterans is to take one day at a time. “We are accustomed to reacting quickly and fixing problems so that is a big adjustment when transitioning to civilian life. And I urge them to ask questions and take advantage of the wonderful resources QCC has to offer.”
Latisha, who was a military police investigator in the Army, says she has always had a passion for law and plans to transfer to John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the summer of 2024.

The Office of Military and Veterans' Services provides support and assistance to our military service members, veterans, and their families as they pursue their academic goals at Queensborough Community College. We meet that objective by providing intentional and focused outreach to our population, while assisting our students with admissions, career services, financial aid/benefits, certification, academic advisement, outside agency referrals and other areas that may arise.
