A Cardinal Shows Its True Colors at the Opening of JSE 24
Precise, whimsical, smooth, rough, sensual, textured, and mixed media. These were the styles of the 71 standout art works that were enjoyed by a beaming crowd at last week's opening of the Juried Student Art Exhibit 2024.
"It's always great when we can bask in the light brought by our students. There was at least one sale made and bids on several other works - this is unprecedented, but I am confident it will become the norm," said Annemarie Coffey, Lecturer, Studio Arts, and co-curator of the exhibit. "It was a hugely successful event and grand evening out for so many."
Sharon Whinston, the artist of the oil painting Cardinal on Branch is graduating from Queensborough this summer with an A.S. degree in Digital Art & Design. She said, “Queensborough really offered me the best way to get comfortable with college life.” Sharon’s advice to art students is to diversify media, to go out of their comfort zone. “College is the best time to experiment.”
Nathaniel Sullivan, Associate Professor, Digital Art, and co-curator of the exhibit added, “At the opening I was able to connect with several students and their family members. It was a chance to get a fuller picture of who they are, and to connect their artwork with their life.”
Graphic Design student Angelique Rosado, who is graduating this spring, participated in the JSE last year with her graphite on paper sketch. She said, "I came to show to support my fellow art students and especially admire the oil paintings. I know how much patience it takes to work in that medium."
Angelique plans to apply to the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan or Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She added that, "Queensborough is such a welcoming environment and a great launching pad. My professors have taught me so many techniques and now I feel ready to move forward in my studies and career."
The show will be open through commencement, May 31, 2024.
