Queensborough Holds Memorial for Beloved Colleague Joseph P. Cartolano
Under bright blue skies, the College community gathered on Tuesday, April 16, to celebrate the life of Joseph P. Cartolano, who for 30 years served Queensborough as its Chief Superintendent of the Department of Buildings and Grounds.
Members of Joe’s family were also present and shared their memories of his long-standing affection for the College and his colleagues.
The event's centerpiece was the planting of a delicate young tree surrounded by fuchsia bushes.
President Mangino welcomed everyone and spoke of the inspiration to connect Joe’s memorial with the College’s Earth Day activities.
“When I started here during the pandemic I met very few people in person except Joe who was relaxed and welcoming. His being here and helping me to get familiar with the campus was very reassuring. As someone who grew up with a dad in construction, I recognized Joe’s expertise--so many projects were in various stages, but he had the big picture. That must have been why everyone would say, call Joe, call Joe, call Joe! He loved coming here and he loved helping people.”
She added, “I hope this beautiful tree will bring comfort to his family and to all as they pass it on their way across the quad, or just to sit near it, or to gaze at it. And as we were planning this event, we had no idea that Joe had a degree in horticulture, so it seems especially appropriate.”
Vivi Tsarouhas, Administrative Superintendent, Buildings and Grounds, said she and fellow colleagues in B&G miss Joe every single day and have been so supportive of one another during this tough time. “I am so grateful and thankful for everyone.”
After the ceremony, volunteers went to their designated spots to begin cleaning and planting outside the Administration Building, Main Gate, Loggia and QCC Art Gallery, Flagpole, and between the Humanities and Science buildings.
