CUNY Proficiency Requirements
The City University of New York (CUNY) requires all students to demonstrate proficiency in English (reading and writing) and math in order to enroll in most credit-bearing courses. Students may establish proficiency in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, meeting benchmark scores on the SAT, ACT, and New York State Regents exams. See CUNY Testing for the benchmark scores that demonstrate proficiency.
Ordinarily, students can demonstrate that they meet the University’s proficiency requirements in English and Math based on their SAT, ACT, or NY State Regents test scores. Because of testing disruptions caused by the pandemic, the University will not collect or use SAT or ACT scores for admissions or proficiency determinations for the Spring 2021, Fall 2021, or Spring 2022 admissions cycles. The University will continue to collect Regents exam scores and use them for proficiency determinations during this time and will continue to run the proficiency index based on Regents exam scores (when available) and an applicant’s high school GPA.
