Fei Ye: A Practical Guide to Markdown and Tools

Description: Markdown is a lightweight markup language that can be used to add formatting elements to plaintext text documents It is the popular markup language that people use it to create websites, documents, books, and presentations. For example, my website, and those online books and slides were built using markdown or its extension R markdown.

In this presentation, I will introduce the syntax of Markdown, the easy to use editor Typora, the universal document converter Pandoc, the static site generator Hugo, and the cloud computing and website hosting platform Netlify. If time permits, I will also introduce the version control system git, the repository hosting platform GitHub, the app GitHub Desktop, and R Markdown.

By the end of this talk, participants will be able to

  1. Write in Markdown,
  2. Use Typora and Pandoc to create a webpage, a word document, a pdf file, and a presentation (html or ppt) from a Markdown file, and

  1. Name Abbreviation and Logo –
    1. Suggestion – Our logo to be ADC instead of ADEAP
      1. We have two formats right now ADEAP and ADC
      2. Some supporting arguments for ADC
        1. Most events running right now which we sponsor (Like SoTL) is using ADC
        2. Make the name user friendly – without changing the full name. Example of institution which abbreviates name as CDC – is Center for Disease Control and Prevention. They do not use CDCP
        3. ADC is a common name in most of the institutions
