The Academic Senate Committee on Academic Development/Elective Academic Programs met on October 3, 2018 at 1:00 pm in S-316
Committee Members in Attendance:
Tirandai Hemraj-Benny (Chairperson); Rezan Akpinar (Co-chair); Renee Rhodd (HEO, Secretary); Merlinda Drini (Faculty); David Pham (Faculty); Susan Riekert (Faculty); Ilse Schrynemakers (Faculty); Anuradha Srivastava (Faculty); Jodi Van Der Horn-Gibson (Faculty)
Business:
The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm
1. The minutes of the last meeting were approved.
2. A motion was made to create a 3rd subcommittee on editing the Bylaws of the committee.
3. Sub-committee updates:
- Promoting and Arranging Lectures and Workshops sub-committee (Susan Riekert, Ilse Schrynemakers and Anuradha Srivastava) met on Thursday, September 13 at 12 p.m. The committee finalized a flyer to promote Christine Kim’s Workshop, “Finding a Journal for Publication” to be offered on 10/12/2018. Questions to be asked on a survey to understand what workshops interest faculty were also finalized.
- Student Evaluations of Faculty sub-committee (Rezan Akpinar, Merlinda Drini Prelvukaj, David Pham and Tirandai Hemraj-Benny) met on Wednesday, September 26 at 12:20 p.m. Based on previous results obtained, it was decided that a shorter survey should be sent out to the faculty during the spring 2019 semester.
4. There was a request for ADC members to attend the CETL Workshop “Finding a Journal for Publication.”
Other events listed include a) Women in Science Club presents Breast Cancer Prevention: An Eastern View by Dr. Rezan Akpinar – October 10, 2018- Room M-21.
b) Education and Career Opportunities in Public Health- October 17, 2018- Room MA-344B.
5. The committee members present at the meeting discussed possible guest speakers to invite for workshops.
Workshop ideas: Rubric Development.
POGIL – for group work (strategies for getting students to share in group work).
Speech communication – Group Communications – “How to improve communications for groups.”
Note taking workshop - how to take color coding notes to help students with strategies for studying.
Humanities Research Workshops – to address and support non-stem research and grant activities.
6. Meeting Schedule for 2019 was discussed – Meetings for spring 2019 are tentative for the 2nd Wednesday of every other month from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
7. ADC Goal: Offer a workshop for the spring of 2019.
8. Next meeting will be November 28, 2018, at 12 p.m.
