Business:

The meeting was called to order at 12:15 PM

  1. Approval minutes from September 25, 2019 meeting: Motion to approve minutes with corrections by Kevin Kolack seconded by Mi-Seon Kim, minutes approved with corrections.
  2. Approval of Agenda: voted unanimously to approve agenda
  3. Barbara Rome will contact the CoC and Steering Committee to inquire about their designees as well as obtain student representative contact information (Dominik Witowski has no CUNYFirst entry and JC Velasco is not currently enrolled according to CUNYFirst)
  4. Middle States Report reviewed
    1. Ian and Artie are reaching out to sponsoring departments to inquire about initiating program assessment
    2. The Committee can inquire with departments to see which have assessment committees
    3. At minimum, a representative of the Committee can ask to attend the dept. Chairs' meeting to discuss the purpose/intent of year-end reports in order to ask them to focus on assessment more clearly.
    4. Thus, the Committee must be sure the rubric we use is acceptable to us. This is an action item for the next meeting.
    5. The Chairs meet twice per month, once with the Provost and once alone before the Senate meets. The latter might be the better choice for our representative to attend, but either could be advantageous.
    6. Ian suggested designing a SurveyMonkey survey on the subject to be sent to Chairs.
    7. Artie noted that year end reports remain problematic. The template may need a total overhaul, as they continue to lack the information desired and no one seems to like to participate. They are intended to be a centralized summary of collgial activity on campus, including assessment. Far too often, sections are filled in with entries such as "see report attached," which defeats the purpose.
    8. Course assessment should lead to program assessment.
  5. Curriculum Maps reviewed
    1. Most of the maps posted on the website need updating from the old format ("X only" showing what courses assess for program outcomes) to the new format ("X" for assessed and "A" for addressed). This is in progress.
    2. Every program outcome must be covered/assessed at least once in a course in the program. There was discussion that this might be a good area for the Committee to focus on. That is, following these maps, which was Middle States Recommendation #1.
  6. The Committee had planned to design a schedule/timetable for reviewing maps and assessments. There was a question about whether this happened or not.
  7. Schedule for reviewing Teaching Departments Year End Report using Rubric developed by committee:
    1. Whan Ki Lee: Art & Design/Biological Science & Geology
    2. Mi-Seon Kim: Business/Chemistry
    3. Kevin Kolack: English/Engineering
    4. Chukwudi Ikwueze: Foreign Languages/Health PE Dance
    5. Manual Martinez: History/Math Comp Science
    6. Amos Orlofsky: Nursing/Physics
    7. Barbara Rome: Social Science/Speech Comm ThArts
  8. Suggestion to look at rubric and Year End Report for suggestions on improving for better data collection.
  9. Next meeting November 13, 2019 at 2:00pm M340
  10. Meeting adjourned 1:40pm

Respectfully submitted,

Kevin Kolack, Ph.D.
Committee on Committee on Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness, Secretary
