The Academic Senate Committee on Senate Committee on Cultural and Archival Resources met on March 11, 2022 2:00pm (online)

The meeting was called to order at 2:00pm

Review and approved minutes from Dec 07, 2021 meeting

Approved (Nathaniel makes motion and Aviva seconds motion).

 

Chair's report

Overview of the tasks for the annual report 2022. Help will be recruited from the members of the committee to gather data and information from the Cultural Center Directors to include in the report. The report will be compiled by the Chair.

Complete the modifications started with the Committee’s webpage.

Elections for Chair and Secretary positions will run in the next meeting.

Franca expressed interest in running for Chair position as first choice, and Secretary as second choice in the upcoming Committee’s elections.

 

Reports from cultural center directors

Art Gallery - Faustino Quintanilla

• Almost read to launch the new Gallery’s website that can be utilized by faculty and students as a tool for research and lessons
• Has been invited by the Picasso Museum in Barcelona to collaborate with them in an exhibition connecting Picasso and African Art. They will use the Gallery’s collection to illustrate what the Artist’s philosophy is trying to convey. The exhibiting will go to Milan and possibly part of it will come here
• Finalizing the Goya Exhibition that started two years ago
• Working with a student to collect all information in data base about the permanent collection that will be available online to anyone interested.
• In this year, the Gallery received a significant amount of works of art, 500+ books in African Art, 500+ books about the life, art, and traditions of the United States Native Americans. All donations.
• Two exhibitions were postponed to open in May and September. This is conditioned to the opening of the College to the public at large

 

QPAC – John Senise

• Theater still going through its major renovation with expectation of resuming programing in the theater by the end of the Fall
• The virtual programming has been successful with live interactive programs online that are available on QPAC’s Facebook Page and on YouTube
• All the programs are also archived on the QPAC’s YouTube Channel
• Continue offering workshops for Seniors and Students. For students offering the QCC Enrichment Dance program during Club hours on Wednesdays. This used to be a in-person class with a professional dancer, now evolved to a virtual class
• Also offering a program called “Gotta Dance - Kids” which has been sponsored by local Legislators for students in the area and it is also a virtual program 

 

KHC – Marisa Hollywood

• This semester had 4 events part of National Endowment for the Humanities Colloquium Series with the theme “Incarceration, Transformation & Paths to Liberation during the Holocaust and Beyond” led by Dr. Azadeh Azi in Sociology, Dr. Mirna Lekic in Music
• Had 2 events in the Human Rights and the Museum Series led by Kat Griefen in Art & Design
• Had 3 collaborative and 2 commemorative events with solid attendance, great number of views on YouTube, with much large and diverse audiences that it could have if set to be in person
• Next event will be “Gendered Aspects of LGBTQIA+ Experiences During the Holocaust” with amazing partnerships
• New collaboration for the Common Read, Fighting Off the Weight of Nonexistence: A Conversation with Claudia Rankine, author of Citizen: An American Lyric
• Running the exhibit The Concentration Camps: Inside the Nazi System of Incarceration and Genocide. It had been scheduled to open in September of the previous year but because of COVID it was launched virtually. Last summer the exhibition was installed for in person attendance
• In January developed a 360 virtual tour that will officially launch shortly
• Slowly getting faculty and students on campus to experience it. Expecting to have a team of volunteer docents during the summer for a proper training to welcome groups in the fall for guided tours
• Has 5 interns (QCC students) and 2 fellows (graduate students) in the Education program. All eligible students will participate in Spring Student Symposium
• In the second year of a professional development series with CETL with 16 faculty in Fall, 4 in spring for individual mentorship. All currently implementing projects inspired by the theme of cultivating compassion
• Starting to get requests for classes to come see the exhibit
• Before the pandemic began to conduct a large testimony collection of the local survivors’ stories and experiences. The collection is made up of materials donated by survivors, liberators and their descendants and generally pertain to life before, during, and after WWII

 

Final remarks

If anyone is interested in serving as the Committee’s Chair or Secretary, make it know to the Committee by next meeting.

The next meeting will be scheduled in the end of April. Member will receive by Doodle poll to set the date and time.
