The Academic Senate Committee on Senate Committee on Cultural and Archival Resources met on March 2, 2020, 10:30am-12:00pm (A508)
Committee Members in Attendance:
In attendance: Susan Agin, Tanya Zhelezcheva, Bianca Sosnovski, Faustino Quintanilla, Wenli Guo, Laura Cohen, Nathaniel Sullivan
Business:
The meeting was called to order at 10:30am
Reviewed and approved minutes from October 28th 2019 meeting
Updates from cultural center directors
Susan Agin QPAC:
- QPAC completing a $13.5 million renovation - to be completed in the fall 2020, with QPAC running a full reinstated schedule again by November 2020 (estimated)
- The presentation of shows off site at other venues has increased visibility for QPAC and QCC, this represents an opportunity to bring in prospective students from high school programs, and from the community at large
- Overview of English and Math department collaborations with QPAC
- Tanya Zhelezcheva mentioned that summer notices to faculty on programming would be appropriate as they are designing syllabi for fall semester
- QPAC website redesign should be ready for new programming in the summer/fall
- Wenli mentioned that CETL can provide links to upcoming performances on their page of the college website
Laura Cohen, KHC:
- Overview of current KHC exhibition: Survivance and Sovereignty on Turtle Island, closing May 27
- Upcoming events related to exhibition: Judy Dow, an artist in the current show will present her work March 18; Protest and Social Movements April 22; and Dismantling Democracy May 6, part of the Part of the KHC/NEH 2019-2020 Colloquium: Authoritarianism on the Continuum
- Next year’s call has been disseminated to faculty for KHC/NEH Scholar in Residence
- After the current show closes, KHC will go to a 2 year exhibition cycle, allowing for deeper engagement with material; show focusing on Holocaust’s carceral system and asking questions of “what it means to concentrate people”, an examination of the camps and the many communities effected by this system
Faustino Quintanilla, Art Gallery:
- Overview of current shows: POTUS, Josefina Brunes; collages of Miriam Beerman, a former QCC faculty member who was the 1st woman to have a solo show at a US museum
- Gallery website redesign, should be ready mid summer
- Goya show upcoming; catalog designed but now working out details of transportation and insurance
- Symposium on feminism with the Social Science department to be hosted at the gallery in May
- April-May is juried student show of Art and Design department student works and for the first time including work from architecture students
- Links with schools in China and students working with the gallery have been affected by travel bans due to coronavirus
- Faustino will teach a continuing studies course on art appreciation / interpretation in May
Update from Wenli on meetings/collaboration with CETL
- Met twice with CETL since the last meeting
- Meg Tarafdar, new director of CETL is supportive of collaboration with committee on integrating cultural centers into curriculum of faculty by exposing faculty at large
- At a workshop designed by the committee, featuring the directors of each cultural center and hosted by CETL
- At the Student Spring Symposium where CETL and Office of Academic Resources will both have rooms for presentations
- Via email committee members can volunteer to present at, plan and support these events
- Tanya mentioned persuading faculty to collaborate by using this as fulfilling publishing / pedagogy requirement
- Susan stressed the importance of including faculty project testimonials
Update on website and meeting minutes
- Wenli: Adam has done this
Update on Guidebook revisions
- There was good participation from most (if not all) members of the committee
- Handed out hard copies of the proposed changes
- Wenli will put together revisions as a draft by end of this semester
Specific Charges of the committee for 2019-2020
- Faustino mentioned that the gallery does not purchase items, all are donated, this required a change of language of the first charge
- Discussion on what goes into the report to senate; there was general agreement that it was more data that a lengthy report
- Tasks would be delegated to individual committee members on what data to collect
- An assessment of the committee would be led by Wenli at the end of the semester
