CCAR Committee Meeting:

Date: Wed. March 6, 2024

Room: NA (Zoom)

Meeting started at 1:04pm

  • December 6, 2023 meeting minutes were approved.
  • Jessica announced that the next meeting would be in-person on Wednesday April 17 at 11am. Jessica proposed that the next meeting be held at QPAC.  Susan Agin informed that committee that even though that there is a certain musical event at that time, a meeting at QPAC would be possible.  A table would be placed in the theater lobby and the meeting would be held there.  Susan also proposed a tour of QPAC for the committee.
  • Jessica explained that one of goals of the April 17 meeting would be to elect a new chair and secretary for the next year.  Jessica asked committee members if anyone was interested in serving as chair or secretary for the 2024-2025 academic year.  One person has expressed an interest in serving as the new chair.
  • Marisa Hollywood gave a report on some of the events of the KHC for the spring semester. One event “Identity in Context: Building the American LGBTQ+ Museum” is scheduled for Thursday March 14, 2024 at 2pm.  This is a free virtual event and is part of the ongoing Human Rights and the Museum series.
  • Marisa also reported on a new partnership this semester with the new QCC CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium. The KHC is doing a number of programs in this collaboration with the theme being “performance as prevention”.  Some of the events are centered on a film from 1997 which in turn was based on the play “Bent” from 1979 which concerns the lives of queer men during the Holocaust.  There will also be an event with two scholars who will discuss both the film and the play.  Marisa also discussed a new partnership with QPAC which concerns a production of the play “Letters from Anne and Martin” which will be performed at the newly renovated QPAC towards the end of the month.  The play is performed by two actors who play Anne Frank and Martin Luthor King, Jr..  Marisa remarked that from this collaboration with QPAC she learned an interesting fact: Anne Frank and Martin Luthor King were born in the same year.  The aforementioned play uses excerpts from Anne Frank’s diary and Martin Luthor King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”.
  • Marisa also reported on an internship program at the KHC for QCC students where the students would work at the reception desk and assists visitors to the KHC Museum.
  • Susan Agin touched base on some of the events being organized by QPAC (in addition to those which are in collaboration with the KHC) this semester. One of the events is a concert by Malevo which are percussion and dance performers from Argentina. Susan noted that Malevo are amazing musicians and dancers who have appeared on “America’s Got Talent”.  In fact, Malevo won the golden buzzer on “America’s Got Talent”.
  • Susan also reported that the amazing ballet company “Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo” will also perform at QPAC.  Susan noted that this ballet company is highly skilled and is also noteworthy for consisting entirely of men who incorporate comedy into their precision ballet. This performance is for the theater and ballet enthusiast and is also a shout out to the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Susan also reported that the LGBTQ activist Isaac Mizrahi is also performing at QPAC . Mizrahi is a famous fashion designer as well as a singer.
  • Susan noted that QPAC events are free for students.
  • Faustino reported that some of the current exhibits have been dismantled to make room for the students’ art show which will open on April 10 and run until commencement.
  • Faustino also reported that the QCC Art Gallery is in the process of preparing a new cultural themed exhibit. In addition, an exhibit from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as an exhibit on gold is being planned for next year.  Faustino also discussed an internship program at the Art Gallery.
  • Faustino also reported that part of the Art Gallery building may be converted to a cafeteria for students and faculty.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 pm.
