The Academic Senate Committee on Senate Committee on Cultural and Archival Resources met on September 28, 2021 2:00pm (online)

Committee Members in Attendance:

Susan Agin, Laura Cohen, Franca Ferrari, Aviva Geismar, Hsiafang (Sharon) Huang, Jessica Prepetit, Faustino Quintanilla, Madeline Ruggiero, Bianca Sosnovski, Nathaniel Sullivan, and Tanya Zhelezcheva.

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 2:00pm

Attendance and greetings; Welcome to the new members.

 

Review and approved minutes from May 20, 2021 meeting

• Approved (Nathaniel makes motion and Jessica seconds motion)
• One correction by Laura on how to list KHC for notes purposes.

 

Chair's report

Review of bylaw charges & goals from steering committee

While reviewing the charges, Nathaniel suggests that Committee consider taking on task to the create a hub on the Committee’s webpage linking the resources available from the Cultural Centers.

 

Reports from cultural center directors

KHC - Laura Cohen

• KHC had it best academic year ever by reaching a large audience with virtual events
• Made everything available online
• Offering a second professional development workshop series with CETL in the Fall focusing on empathy and compassion, with 4 sessions discussing with faculty ideas to develop assignments. The workshop series will continue in the Spring semester to develop students’ assignments and assessments
• Partnership with the Welcome Read Committee in two events: event with President Mangino and Nate Powell, illustrator of John Lewis’ March: Book One, and an event with Prof. Robin Ford about graphic novels.
• Working in partnership with the Common Read to bring a presentation in the Spring with author of the book Citizen, Claudia Rankine
• NEH Colloquia series and lectures are being presented in the Fall semester, which the description of these events available on the KHC’s webpage
• The exhibition The Concentration Camps: Inside the Nazi System of Incarceration and Genocide has been available online for over year and contains all information about the concentration camps. It is the largest exhibit mounted by the Center and will be available for at least 3 years
• The Center is open to the public, but tours are not being offered 

QPAC - Susan Agin

• Made their entire program to be available online
• Completed 6 outdoor (drive-in) concert series to bring people together safely to “celebrate the arts” with a wide variety of programming.
• Has a new website that is accessible
• Both virtual and in person events are being offered
• The protocol to keep the public safe for in person events is available on the website
• Had a successful year in collaborating with faculty to find resources to keep students engaged including film premiers, live virtual presentation of the play Ibsen’s Dolls House with professional actors with Q&A.
• This year QPAC will work with English Dept to present this Fall a presentation the Mask of Red Death, a horror story, and will conduct interviews with film makers and actors that predominantly work in the horror genre
• The new website includes testimonials of customers and also faculty in which they describe how they utilize QPAC to integrate their curricula
• Offers free enrichment workshops for students. This Fall it’s a Dance enrichment program offered in person and also virtually
• Will start to offer in person programming again in the new theater in March 2022

Art Gallery – Faustino Quintanilla

• Reviewing the internship program to obtain funding to give students honorarium and also focus on ways to connect the program with preparation of the students for the job market
• Working on the website so that it can be utilized by faculty and students for research and lessons, including a virtual classroom in reference to the permanent collection, and testimonials of faculty that used the Gallery over the years
• Received this year a donation of 500 books for research in African Art that will be incorporated in the library system and located in the Gallery’s library
• Currently working on new exhibitions which will also include 360 degrees virtual rooms
• Presently offering a photography exhibition about 9/11 by a QCC student who was working as research photographer for the Fire Department and donated his photos to the Gallery. Also offering an online an exhibition about the presidency, the elections and how the system works
• The Gallery is open to public, but appointments are required

 

Next meeting is schedule to be held on Nov 16 to talk about goals and charges.
