The Academic Senate Committee on Continuing Education & Workforce Development Committee met on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 on Zoom.

- Attendance: Dean Hui Yin Hsu; Jannette Urciuoli (Academic Senate Designee); Elaine Friedman (Speech); Anuradha Srivastava (Biology); Gabriel Lataianu (Social Sciences); Jun H. Shin (Chemistry); Zeynep Ozkan Akcay (Math); & Alison Cimino (English).
- Approval of Meeting Minutes- May 12, 2021: Minutes approved.
- Once approved, the minutes will be posted to the CEWD website
- The committee will share a report with the Academic Senate updating the Senate on the committee’s activities
- Elections for 2021 – 2022 (Secretary):
- Gabriel Lataianu was unanimously voted to the position of Secretary.
- Department of Labor (DOL) / Strengthening Community Colleges (SCC) update/MIT:
- Six community colleges received a grant in February to respond to the needs of the labor market and to create an integrated pathway to education.
- The grant includes a macro view and a micro view.
Macro view: Offer programs to students
Micro view: Remove barriers and obstacles to streamline that process so that students can attain an education
- Aims to reach adult learners, untapped talent, New Yorkers who need jobs, CUNY alumni, to help economic recovery and to prepare people for the labor market.
- 4-year grant
- Stackable credentials so that students can receive credits to help them in employment and attain a college degree
- Working with major corporations such as Amazon, Google, Cisco to fund and support the grant
- Credit for prior learning:
- CEWD must go through the senate to get approval and work with faculty to develop a systematized method for offering credit for prior learning
- Have more courses align with credit for prior learning
- Recruit more adult learners by offering them credit for their military and other life experiences
- Small Business (SBC) /Community Health Worker (CHW)
- A program to connect small businesses and former vaccine workers and employ them
- Offer training program for community health workers and put them into agencies as Community Health Workers
- Consolidated Funding Application /Certified Recovery Peer Advocate Program (CFA/CRPA)
- Five-million-dollar grant to help people with substance abuse
- Receive training to become a certified peer advocate
- Governor supports this program
- Working with Health/ Education and Dance Department to create a state curriculum
- Labor market/higher Ed transformation/skills gap/untapped talent
- Create a clear process so adult learners can attain both job training and a higher education degree
- The committee discusses cost for students. These programs are free, but each funder has criterion for grant recipients.
