Report on Recent Activities

The Committee on Environment, Quality of Life and Disabilities Issues would like to report progress on the following area:

Subcommittee on College Accessibility

A subcommittee of the Steering Committee was formed during the Fall 2019 semester to address Accessibility Issues. The Committee on Environment, Quality of Life and Disability Issues (EQLD) was asked to adopt the Subcommittee on College Accessibility as a subcommittee of the EQLD committee. At the November 27, 2019 meeting of the EQLD committee, we voted to accept the subcommittee and the charges as described below. A motion to vote was made and all eight members voted in favor. The focus of the subcommittee is ADA course compliance since currently many courses do not meet the required guidelines. It will also raise awareness across campus by informing faculty, perhaps via flash sessions, on the resources already available and clarification of the ADA CUNY requirements. Dr.

Urciuoli announced that she was stepping down as Chair of the Subcommittee and that Dr. Angela Ridinger Dotterman will replace her as Chair. At present the subcommittee has eight self-selected members. The Subcommittee will generate its own report and submit it to the EQLD committee. After a year, and depending on how much work has been accomplished, the subcommittee will dissolve or continue operating.

The charges for the Subcommittee on College Accessibility:

A. Membership:

  1. Membership shall be determined by the Chair of the Environment, Quality of Life and Disability Issues
  2. The Director of Services for Students with Disabilities, or designee, shall serve as an ex- officio member.
B. Function:
  1. To build faculty awareness of existing college policies and procedures related to accessibility and course design in consultation with appropriate college offices and governance
  2. To work in conjunction with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), and CUNY Assistive Technology Services (CATS), to promote support for faculty as they improve accessibility in their
  3. To raise awareness on campus about accessibility.
