Committee Meeting Dates and times
Meetings:
The Committee on Curriculum met on Tuesday afternoons, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. online using Blackboard Collaborate hosted from S-322 during the spring semester. The committee met 12 times during the 2021-2022 academic year. Meetings in 2021 took place on September 21; October 26; November 16, 23 and 30. Meetings in 2022 took place on February 22; March 15 and 22; April 5, 12 and 26; and May 10.

Business Department
A.A.S. in Computer Information Systems – change to A.S. in Computer Information Systems (4/26/2022)
Rationale:
Because most students who earn the A.A.S. in CIS transfer to a four-year institution, the degree will be converted to an A.S. in CIS.
Business Administration (A.S.) (4/26/2022)
Rationale:
QCC is in the process of developing a Business Academy with the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. Under the arrangement, QCC Business Administration students will be able to take all of the courses needed for admission to the Business School at QCC, before they transfer. This will require some modifications to the A.S. in Business Administration program.
One of the courses that students need to take before applying to Zicklin is Business Communications. Currently, that course is not offered at QCC. However, our Communications program has developed a new Business Communication course that will transfer to Baruch, SP-217. It will be submitted to Pathways under area 2D. That course is being recommended for students planning to transfer to Baruch College. Additionally, students must complete both ECON-101 and ECON-102 before applying to Zicklin. The current Business Administration program only requires that students take one of the two courses. Students who are planning to transfer to Baruch will now be recommended to take both ECON-101 and ECON-102.
In an unrelated matter, MA-121 is being moved from the core to the major requirements. MA-121, a one credit course, is not part of the common core. An error in footnote 2 is also corrected.
Department of Biological Sciences & Geology
A.S. in Health Sciences (10/26/21)
Rationale:
To better connect graduates, the program has added concentrations that prepare graduates for 4-year programs in specific health science fields, such as respiratory care. The revised program will also require BI-301/302 instead of BI-201/202. That change in the core biology courses is being made to match up better with 4-year programs.
Medical Assistant A.A.S. Program (11/23/2021)
Rationale:
The Chemistry Department has made CH-121 a corequisite for CH-120. Therefore, Medical Assisting students who wish to take CH-120 must also take CH-121. The list of elective choices has been updated accordingly. Additionally, ENGL-103 is no longer being taught by the English Department. As a result, it is being removed as an option in Required Core 1A.
A.S. in Health Sciences (3/22/2022)
Rationale:
An internship is not required by all Health Sciences students, particularly at the level of the Associate’s degree. Therefore, it is unfair for it to be a major requirement. Placing the course into a major’s elective category will still provide students the opportunity to have an internship, should they wish to gain that experience.
Medical Assistant A.A.S. Program (4/12/2022)
Rationale:
As the health care industry changes, the curriculum needs to be adjusted to prepare students appropriately to work as Medical Assistants in the field. Additionally, we want to get this program accredited by an external agency (CAAHEP or ABHES). This proposal aims to fit the curriculum map designed by the accreditation agency. Additionally, one more Math common core option is being added to provide students with additional options.
Department of Communication, Theatre, & Media Production
Liberal Arts and Sciences – Associate in Arts (A.A.) Degree (3/15/2022)
Rationale:
New courses are being added to the list of electives in the concentration. This will provide a wider range of options for students who may go forward to degrees in speech pathology as well as degrees in communication studies.
Engineering Technology Department
Internet and Information Technology – A.A.S. Degree Program (3/15/2022)
Rationale:
Internet and Information Technology is a rapidly evolving field. This revision refocuses the IIT degree to meet present job requirements by providing additional flexibility for electives and as well as additional opportunities for internships while maintaining a solid core in liberal arts and a strong technical foundation. A higher minimum level of math is required for better transfer and to meet job expectations.
Companies providing internships have requested a variety of hours to make the internships viable for them. By providing the opportunity to fulfill 1-8 hours of cooperative education towards degree requirements, we are in a better position to partner with industry and can also provide flexibility to meet student needs.
The English department no longer plans to offer ENGL-103. ENGL-101 is the appropriate replacement.
3-credit internship courses are added to allow for more flexible partnership with industry and to also meet student needs.
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Liberal Arts and Sciences – Associate in Arts (A.A.) Degree (3/22/2022)
Rationale:
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature is proposing a new concentration in Spanish for the Liberal Arts and Sciences A.A. Degree. This concentration will form the basis of articulation agreements with B.A. programs in Spanish at several senior colleges.
Department of Health, Physical Education and Dance
Liberal Arts and Sciences – Associate in Arts (A.A.) Degree (3/15/2022)
Rationale:
The Exercise Science, Personal Training, and Physical Education concentrations will be deleted. Students interested in those fields will be better served by the new A.S. in Movement Science degree program.
A.S. in Public Health (3/15/2022)
Rationale:
This revision moves HE-202, Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health from a major elective course to a major required course. This course is included in the articulation agreement with York College’s B.S. Public Health and is a requirement for their program. It would serve all Public Health students to take the course.

Rationale:
Two degree programs, LA-AA and LE-AA, have the same program name, “Liberal Arts and Sciences.” To clearly differentiate the two programs, the name of the LE-AA will be changed to “Liberal Arts and Sciences (Childhood Education)”.

Notice
At the September 22, 2021 meeting, the committee approved the removal of ENGL-103: “Writing for New Media” (which has not been offered by the English Department for some time) from the QCC Course Catalog in all instances of courses or programs for which there is an option to take ENGL-101 or ENGL-103 (so that ENGL-101 is the only option).
Meetings of Subcommittee
On April 6, 2021, the committee voted to create the Subcommittee of Committee on Curriculum on Computer Courses and Programs, which started meeting in April 2021.
The subcommittee met online using Zoom. The committee met nine times after its creation. Meetings in 2021 took place on April 19 and 26; May 3 and 17; October 6; November 10 and December 15. Meetings in 2022 took place on February 16 and March 16.
The work of the subcommittee was tremendously helpful in vetting plans and proposals from the Business Department, Engineering Technology Department and Department of Mathematics and Computer Science before examination by the Committee on Curriculum. It also established a higher level of communication between the departments that will be extraordinarily useful in the years to come.
The subcommittee believes that its major charge has been fulfilled and no longer needs to meet. The Committee on Curriculum did not renew the subcommittee for the next fiscal year.

Recommend how an AS degree in Computer Science for transfer would be constructed, assist academic department(s) in the proposing of such
Recommend any consolidations, eliminations or additions of courses to the Offices and Departments involved

Recommend how Continuing Education and Workforce Development activities, classes and programs should be related to and lead to credit bearing offerings

In particular, the committee members, as well as other faculty, were very accommodating and understanding of the challenges and limitations of working entirely with online meetings in the fall and online/in-person meetings in the spring. Many thanks to Isabella Lizzul, who has done an excellent job as the secretary of the Committee on Curriculum this year. Doreen Fox-Herron was especially useful in providing the Registrar’s point of view with curricular matters.
