Minutes for October 15, 2019

The Academic Senate Committee on Vendor Committee met on October 15th 2019

Committee Members in Attendance:

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 12:15pm

Minutes from meeting on May 8^th 2019 were approved.

3. Committee discussed suggestion from Chief Librarian Jeanne Galvin to include flash drives in vending machine in the library. Our discussion included the following points:
   • Possibility of piloting sale of flash drives for a temporary trial period
   • Galvin notes that students are asking if flash drives are available for purchase at the library (bookstore is too far; they may not have time to leave, buy a flash drive, and come back to save their work)
   • The committee noted that librarians and other faculty/staff may be able to teach students how to attach files to email, upload them to a dropbox, etc. – perhaps a workshop on digital literacy?
   • We discussed making this recommendation to the library committee or the ACC
   • The tutoring center or academic learning center might also work with students to build skills in using MS word, excel, etc.
4. New Business:
   • Suggestion from faculty member to provide vending machines on campus serving smaller- sized beverages at lower cost.
   • Suggestion from faculty member for Oakland Dining Room to carry pre-prepared salad and sandwich options (similar to what is in Starbucks) because there are often long lines in the Science Cafeteria and Starbucks; faculty do not have much time to get food between classes             and meetings
   • We will share these suggestions with Bill Faulkner.
5. Review of Academic Senate Standing Committee Activities form and 2019-2020 charges – tabled until next meeting due to addition of several new business items on agenda.
6. Plan to update the Spring 2007 Guide for Committee on Vendor Services Members
   • Janet shared digital and printed copies of the guide
   • Committee members agreed to work on revising/updating the guide via Google Docs; we will discuss our revisions together in person at our next mtg.

Dear Prof. Galvin,

We discussed the issue of selling flash drives at our recent meeting of the Committee on Vendor Services. We will suggest the idea to Bill Faulkner and follow up with you when we hear back from him.

However, we also discussed the many cost-free ways students can save their work, such as emailing files as attachments, using clouds or drives, etc. We also discussed that our students do not always know how to do these things and we were wondering what, if any, resources on campus are available to help them learn (workshops, ACC tutoring, etc.) Any information you can offer us would be appreciated.

Dear Vice President Faulkner,

The Committee on Vendor Services recently received three suggestions from faculty that we would like to share with you:

1) A faculty member suggested that the vending machine in the library sell flash drives for students. Though we do sell flash drives in the bookstore, the faculty member noted that the bookstore is not open during all hours at which students might be working on campus, and notes that students often come to librarians asking about options for saving their work.

2) A suggestion from a faculty member to provide vending machines on campus serving smaller-sized beverages at lower cost. The faculty member provided photos of similar vending machines seen at another campus, which are attached here.

3) A faculty member suggested that Oakland Dining Room carry pre-prepared salad and sandwich options (similar to what is available in Starbucks) because there are often long lines in the Science Cafeteria and Starbucks, and faculty do not have much time to get food between classes and meetings.
