List of Bylaws charges and notation of “completed” or “not completed” with reasoning for incomplete items

1.  Report and recommend to the Academic Senate on matters pertaining to the Library of Queensborough Community College.

*Not completed, but in process. The committee has been working on a student survey asking how they prefer to use the library, as well as aspects they would like changed. The committee was also developing a report based on a survey of the library faculty and staff. The goal was to have both reports to share with the Senate at the same tine. However, communication with various offices to ensure that the student survey was both appropriate and timely took much longer than anticipated. The survey is ready to be sent to students; the new committee will just have to ensure that the questions are approved, and then disseminated appropriately.

2.  Serve as an advisory group to the Library Department, that will:

  1. consider and advocate for students’ interests in the use of the library and its resources including (but not limited to) the allocation of space, the rules and regulations of use, and the availability of resources.

*Not completed but in development. (see above explanation re: survey) Additionally, although invited to each meeting, the student representative did not attend meetings, therefore we did not have--other than our own classrooms--a platform for the committee to communicate directly with students.

*Discussed the avenues through which we could advocate for longer library hours. Staggering staffing was one suggested J. Galvin made.

*Also discussed advocating in our individual department meetings embedding the use of Microsoft 365 in classroom assignments to help students develop their skill at the programs.

*Discussed encourging the expansion of reserve tests as well as OER.

  1. consider and refer to other administrative offices (e.g., Buildings and Grounds, Academic Affairs) issues related to the function and condition of the library building.

*Completed.

  1. consider, make recommendations, and advocate for initiatives that build or improve access to the library’s collections.

*Completed.

  1. review the current state of pedagogical technologies in the Library, and make recommendations to the Library staff and Senate regarding the maintenance and upgrade of these technologies.

*Not completed, but in progress. As COVID has a lingering effect on the use of the library, the committee was also hoping to gain insight into technologies and supports for student usage through the survey data.

List of Steering Committee charges and notation of “completed” or “not completed” with reasoning for incomplete items

Consider surveying students on their usage of the library and report the results to the Director of the Library.--Not complete, but in progress. The survey is complete, the 2022-2023 committee just has to find the right time to disseminate.

Continue to update your committee website with committee members names and upcoming scheduled meeting times (make sure to include an email for those who want to join a meeting).--completed.

Create Committee Addendum for website--completed.

Summary of actions not covered by above

The Library Committee thanked Jeanne Galvin for her contributions to the Library and the committee during her time at QCC, and congratulated her on her retirement. We also thanked William Faulkner for his continued communication with the committee on the update and status of the library bathrooms to reach ADA standards. The committee did not have a hand in its removal, but the Starbucks is now relocated to the Science building which was a long concern. We spoke with VP Faulkner regarding that, and he communicated the difficulty of moving it. Jeanne Galvin spoke of how it created issues for the library, and the committee is grateful that it has finally moved.

We would also like to thank the Steering Committee for their guidance and patience. The structure, assistance, and tutorial videos have been an incredible help.

Committee recommendations for upcoming year

Utilize the report created by Emily Pelletier regarding the Library Faculty/Staff survey from Fall 2021; there was discussion to add some new items based on post-COVID experience and need.

Communicate with necessary offices to disseminate the student survey created by Angela Ridinger-Dotterman.

Both of these reports will be essential to advocate student, faculty, and staff needs regarding the library and its use.

Individual member contributions and thanks

Jodi Van Der Horn-Gibson served as chair, ran meetings, communicated with outside offices, and wrote the Committere Addendum.

Elizabeth Sutton served as the secretary; Professor Sutton took meeting minutes.

Emily Pelletier compiled a report from the faculty survey taken in Fall 2021.

Angela Ridinger-Dotterman created the student survey.

The entired committee helped write the survey questions and responses.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jodi Van Der Horn-Gibson for the Academic Senate Committee on the Library
