REVIEW OF RESPONSES TO SURVEY: The Chair created a short survey for committee members to review and complete in time for the December 5th During the meeting, several members shared their responses to some of the survey questions.

RESPONSES AND SUGGESTIONS DISCUSSED:

  1. In what ways do you think our pre-college programs can be well integrated into daily life at Queensborough CC?
  • Overall, integration continues to be challenging, however, has improved over the last five-years.
  1. List any QCC events, collaborations, or initiatives that you know of (or have participated in) that involve our pre-college programs
  2. What changes or improvements could Queensborough make to serve students in our pre-college programs?
  • A need for dedicated space on campus for pre-college programs to run in. Dedicated rooms with better technology – computers, projectors etc.
  • A need for dedicated space on campus for pre-college staff and adviser offices.
  • The need to establish a clear distinction between BTECH students, College Now students and students in other programs. Each program focuses on a distinct QCC student population (e.g., high school students who are taking college level courses vs. students who have completed high school but are missing some of the skills necessary to succeed in college).
  • A need for better usage and understanding of the terminology used to describe the students in all the pre-college programs – non-matriculated student vs. a pre-college student.
  • Increase staff awareness of how language usage impacts students and student sense of belonging in college in general and specifically at QCC.
  • Increase faculty awareness of pre-college programs and train faculty on proper usage of terminology to describe the programs and the students who participate in the programs to decrease stereotypes and remove any negative connotations associated with this student population.
  • Overall, an increase non-pre-college faculty awareness and understanding of all pre-college programs.
  1. In what ways do you think you can contribute to this committee?
  • Increase pre-college committee members speaking opportunities. Committee members can take more initiative and discuss the different pre-college programs available at QCC and their roles in the lives of these students during their individual department meetings and during the faculty senate meetings.
  • The pre-college committee can strive to better define the goals and objectives of the pre-college committee.
  • The pre-college committee can develop a better tool to disseminate information about the committee and its activities to the faculty and staff population as a whole – a more approachable website/page/newsletters/email communications, etc.
  1. Other ideas, comments, or suggestions regarding the working of this committee?
  • A great need to help reframe student attitudes towards QCC and increase commitment to QCC and various pre-college programs.
  • To better help acclimate students to QCC, allow high school students who have been accepted to QCC but who have never participated in any QCC run program to tour the campus and get familiar with the campus before making their final decision on whether they will enroll at QCC. This will help students have a first-hand view of what to expect if they do decide to enroll at QCC.
  • Implementation of an ambassador program which provides peer-to-peer mentoring from former College Now students to new College Now students. In the hopes of helping new students understand some of the resources they have available to them through the pre-college programs.
  • The possibility of using enrollment performance data to better understand the variables which affect student enrollment and participation at QCC.
  1. Updates on Pre-College Programs
    1. CLIP: now has on campus classrooms for the spring semester, however, there is a continued need for dedicated lab space.
    2. B-Tech: students accepted into the new Baruch Business Academy. These students have not been matriculated at Baruch yet, but they just need to maintain a 2.5 GPA.
  1. FUTURE MEETINGS: Three dedicated weeks during the spring 2023 semester will be chosen for regular IN-PERSON meetings via a DOODLE shared through email.

Academic Senate Bylaws

Article VII. Section 17. The Committee on Pre-College

 

The Committee on Pre-College shall consist of six (6) members of the instructional staff and one (1) student. Ex-Officio members should include the following: Directors of CUNY Start, CLIP, College Now, and the BTECH Campus Liaison.

The Committee on Pre-College shall:

  1. Report and recommend to the Academic Senate on services and facilities available to the Pre-College programs.
  2. Serve as a mechanism for articulation alignment between the Pre-College instructional staff and students, with respective academic departmental chairs and the Academic Senate.
  3. Consider and evaluate proposals received from faculty, students, and the community regarding policies and practices pertaining to Pre-College programs in consultation with respective academic departmental chairs and Dean of Academic Affairs.
  4. Recommend proposals and policies that would enhance the operation of the pre-college programs to the Associate Dean of Academics.
  5. Serve as a consultative body for the development of Continuing Education and Workforce Development programs.
  6. Provide feedback to proposed courses/programs and existing ones to ensure:
    • that they are presented to the related committees and/or academic departments to avoid any conflicts of interest
    • that they are in keeping with the mission and image of college subsequently reporting these new courses/programs and/or existing ones to the Academic Senate for its information.

The 6 members will be assigned by the Committee on Committees in staggered terms as follow: 2 members from 2020- 2021 (1 year), 2 members from 2020-2022 (2 years), and 2 members from 2020-2023 (3 years).  Thereafter, vacancies will be filled for 3 year terms.
