3. Minutes of the December 5, 2022 meeting were approved.
4. Chairperson’s Report

-The Chair attended a Senate Steering Committee meeting via Zoom for Chairs/ Secretaries on 2/22/23, and reminded voting members with expiring terms to indicate their preference for new committee work to the Senate Steering Committee.  

-The chair has been contacted by a student representative, Emily Diana, from Student Government willing to be the Pre-College Committee’s student representative.

5. Updates on Pre College Programs

5.A   BTECH

- Ashley Legitime reports that BTECH has increased enrollment this spring with 65 BTECH sophomores. There is a March 15^th steering committee meeting, and general progress, as students and industry partners begin to be able to meet in-person, on campus.

5.B. CUNYSTART

-Bonnie Flaherty reports that CUNY START is trying to think through how to talk about progress with students, especially as remediation is no longer considered at CUNY. It has been encouraging that there have been ongoing gateway course visitations of English 101 and Math 119 for CUNY Start English and Math instructors. 

5.C. COLLEGE NOW

- Maryann Meyer reports that her Future Ready program has 480 students this spring, and that that they are hosting a College Now retreat on 6/1.

5.D   CLIP 

- Maz Nikoui reports that CLIP filled up 8 classes with 215 students this spring semester and describes less intake from English 90, but a general uptick in ESL students. Reminds us that the Accuplacer has recently been rolled out and may be a factor in enrollment.

6. Credit for Prior Learning

• The committee began to discuss three credit for prior learning industry credential reports submitted to the committee by Belle Birchfield, Deputy Chair of the Engineering and Technology Department on Monday 2/27: ET-757, ET-758, ET-481. These reports in PDF form were emailed to committee members to review.

 

• Dugwon Seo introduced the reports and discussion followed. Questions were raised about how the credit for prior learning would be granted, and whether students would be required to enroll at QCC or choose to go elsewhere at CUNY.

 

• Discussion was tabled because of time constraints. The committee agreed to continue discussion and vote at a future meeting.

 

7. FUTURE MEETINGS: Committee members and the Chair acknowledged the need for a follow-up meeting and indicated that there will be in-person and zoom opportunities to attend the next meeting.

Academic Senate Bylaws

Article VII. Section 17. The Committee on Pre-College

 

The Committee on Pre-College shall consist of six (6) members of the instructional staff and one (1) student. Ex-Officio members should include the following: Directors of CUNY Start, CLIP, College Now, and the BTECH Campus Liaison.

The Committee on Pre-College shall:

1. Report and recommend to the Academic Senate on services and facilities available to the Pre-College programs.
2. Serve as a mechanism for articulation alignment between the Pre-College instructional staff and students, with respective academic departmental chairs and the Academic Senate.
3. Consider and evaluate proposals received from faculty, students, and the community regarding policies and practices pertaining to Pre-College programs in consultation with respective academic departmental chairs and Dean of Academic Affairs.
4. Recommend proposals and policies that would enhance the operation of the pre-college programs to the Associate Dean of Academics.
5. Serve as a consultative body for the development of Continuing Education and Workforce Development programs.
6. Provide feedback to proposed courses/programs and existing ones to ensure:
   • that they are presented to the related committees and/or academic departments to avoid any conflicts of interest
   • that they are in keeping with the mission and image of college subsequently reporting these new courses/programs and/or existing ones to the Academic Senate for its information.

The 6 members will be assigned by the Committee on Committees in staggered terms as follow: 2 members from 2020- 2021 (1 year), 2 members from 2020-2022 (2 years), and 2 members from 2020-2023 (3 years).  Thereafter, vacancies will be filled for 3 year terms.
