The Academic Senate Committee on Student Activities met on May 4, 2020 at 1:30pm (remote)
Committee Members in Attendance:
Dr. Kimberly Riegel, Jennifer Klein, Wilfredo Moran, Randelle Sasa, William Blick, Stephen Atkins, Ray Volel, and Gisela Rivera
Business:
The meeting was called to order at 1:33
Chair Kimberly Riegel called the WebEx meeting to order at 1:40pm
Absent: Dr. Celia Sporer, Dr. Carolyn King, Dr. Clara Wajngurt, Assistant Dean Tikola Russell and 3 Student's (TBA)
Approval of Minutes:
- Minutes from February 10, 2020 will be sent out through email for review and approval.
- No minutes for March 9, 2020 or April 15, 2020 meeting due to cancellation of meetings.
Agenda Discussion Topics:
- Updates on Projects:
- Volunteer Fair-Committee discussed that it would be unfair to hold annual volunteer fair in fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation.
- Volunteer Fair usually consist of Hospitals, Organizations with health care workers, and organizations filled with frontline workers, and places that have been overburdened during COVID-19.
- Committee took a vote to revisit the Volunteer during the Spring 2021 semester.
- Volunteer fair will be discussed again in fall 2020.
- Planning Calendar is on hold now, will revisit in fall 2020. Discussed not stretching and asking IT to help right now is fair.
- Many of the projects the committee was looking at doing in spring and fall 2020 has been put on hold due to COVID-19. The officers needed to jump start and move forward with the projects are essential to keep the college running smoothly.
- Chair Kimberly Riegel with advice decided to put projects to the side until further notice.
- Welcome to the Committee:
- 2 Members came off the committee this year: Kimberly Riegel and Jennifer Klein
- Kimberly Riegel (Physics Department) was voted back on, Welcome Back!
- Carolyn King (Mathematics and Computer Science Department), Welcome Back to the Committee! Dr. Carolyn King has served on the SAC Committee multiple times before.
- Elections by Committee for 2020-2021:
- Elected Chair: Dr. Kimberly Riegel
- Elected Secretary: William Blick
- Standing time for Student Activities Committee to Meet Fall 2020:
- Chair Kimberly Riegel discussed having a set day and time to meet every month to make it easier for committee members and student members to schedule.
- Chair Kimberly Riegel sent a doodle poll out before today's meeting to get an idea, but still waiting on a few more responses to set the dates.
- Student Activities Report:
- Gisela Rivera reported that SGA Elections are going on now util May 7, 2020.
- They have had 700 votes counted as of today, encourage committee to spread the word about elections. Raymond Volel reiterated Gisela and asked for help in this area.
- Gisela Rivera informed committee that student activities had a productive virtual Asian Heritage month.
- NYPIRG is ding Online events
- SGA is looking at how they can provide students with virtual events for fall 2020, just to be prepared if they must go in that direction. They are also prepared for campus events as well.
- Budget may be an issue due to COVID-19, enrollment, and retention. BOT is looking at 25% reduction in student activities fees.
- Everything is still up in the air but working with the assumption that Clubs will be functioning differently if we are remote.
- Gisela stated that Club Fair is booked, but that may change.
- Chair Kimberly Riegel offered the committee's assistance to Student activities.
