The Academic Senate Committee on Student Activities met on May 09, 2023 at 9:00AM (Virtual)

Committee Members in Attendance:

WWilfredo Moran, Ilse Schrynemakers, Alison Mello, Jennifer Klein, Sybil White, Jacqueline Mulone

Excused: Kwang Hyun Kim, Weier Ye

Business:

The meeting was called to order at

Chairperson Wilfredo Moran called the meeting to order at 9:11am

Approval of Minutes:

• Minutes approved from 04/14/2023 Meeting 

Agenda Discussion Topics:

1.) Called Meeting to Order: 9:11 AM (Virtual Meeting)

2.) Approved Meeting Minutes from 4/14/23

3.) Introduction of New Members

• The committee welcomed new members Sybil White (English) and Jacqueline Mulone (Social Sciences)

4.) Discussion of Results of Spring 2023 Volunteer Fair

• Members discussed wrap up of Spring 2023 Volunteer Fair which was held on April 26^th 12-2pm. Members noted:
  • Good student traffic and interest.
  • Many more community organizations participated than in previous years.
  • Humanities Quad was an excellent location.
  • Flyers were a nice way to reach students in area.
  • Ideas for next year’s fair:
    • Coordinating date of fair to overlap with another large student event in the location (possibly a Student Government event or Title IX event as was held this year).
    • Request A-frame poster and flyers at least 2 weeks prior to fair date. This year’s request for flyers, but not poster, could be met.
    • Continuing to include on-campus offices, such as Career Services.

4.) Involvement of Student Government

• Chairperson Moran reached out to interested Student Government officer and extended invitation attend the meeting. Officer was not able to attend. Chairperson(s) will continue to reach out to Student Government officers next year.

5.) Plans for Upcoming Year

• Members supported having 2 events in the upcoming year:
  • Fall 2023: Faculty/Student Discussion Event
  • Spring 2024: Volunteer Fair
• A Faculty/Student Discussion Event was held previously by the committee and members shared that it was a successful way for students to connect with instructors across departments. Committee discussions/planning of this event will take place at the beginning of next academic year.

6.) Elections for Officers for Upcoming Academic Year

• Chairperson Moran invited members to share interest in continuing as officers or becoming officers.
  • Chairpersons Moran and Schrynemakers stated interest in returning as Co-Chairpersons. Secretary Mello stated interest in returning as Secretary.
  • No other members present stated interest in running for officer.
  • Steering Committee Designee Jennifer Klein offered to tally votes as non-voting member of the committee.
    • Chairperson Moran contacted all current and new members by email and asked that all members both 1) express their interest in becoming officers and 2) votes be sent directly to Jennifer Klein.
    • After the meeting, Jennifer Klein shared the election results (with 5 member votes received):
      • Elected Co-Chairpersons: Wilfredo Moran and Ilse Schrynemakers (received 5 votes)
      • Elected Secretary: Alison Mello (received 5 votes)

7.) Old Business

• Members supported holding discussion of survey to students until the upcoming academic year. Chairperson Moran thanked Jennifer Klein for sharing previous survey questions and noted that discussion of revisions could occur in the upcoming year.

• Chairperson Moran expressed thanks to current committee members for their work this year.
