The Academic Senate Committee on Student Activities met on November 28, 2022 at 2:00pm (Virtual)


Committee Members in Attendance:

Wilfredo Moran, Ilse Schrynemakers, Carolyn King, Kwang Hyun Kim, Gisela Rivera, Raymond Volel, Jennifer Klein, Alison Mello (Excused Absence: Weier Ye)


Business:

The meeting was called to order at 2:04 PM

Chairperson Wilfredo Moran called the Zoom meeting to order at 2:04 PM. 

Approval of Minutes:

  • Minutes approved from 10/24/2022 Meeting

Agenda Discussion Topics:

1.  Post-Volunteer Fair Discussion

  • Fall 2022 Volunteer Fair Wrap Up
    • Fair held 11/9/22 during Club Hours in Student Union Lounge.
    • Organizations: 10 programs signed up and cleared for access- only 4 attended. One company gave advance in advance.
      • Members suggested modifying instructions to organizations to include a note about confirming attendance/reaching out if no longer able to attend.
      • Members volunteered to reach out to organizations that did not attend to get insights into their inability to participate.
    • Location: There was not much traffic around the Student Lounge.
      • Members suggested alternate locations for upcoming fair including outdoors in warmer weather near the Science Building or Quad.
    • Promotion: Printing and distributing flyers was successful at increasing student traffic. This should be continued in the future, along with posting event to college website and calendar.
    • Miscellaneous Feedback from Organizations:
      • Some programs asked for Wi-Fi access. Members noted that it would be good to prepare instructions for future events.
      • Some programs noted that they preferred attending online events.

 

2. Next meeting will be held in person

  • Meeting time: 12/15/22 at 1pm (Tentative Location Library 418)

3. Old Business

  • Chairperson Moran will try to reach about to student government representatives.

4.  New Business

  • Discussion of events for Spring 2023
    • Members discussed holding a Volunteer Fair in Spring 2023 (tentative date sometime in April). Priority is to reserve space outside of Science Building or Humanities Quad for a potential in-person fair.
    • Multiple tables may require reserving the Humanities Quad. Chairpersons will inquire about availability for a date and rain date. Wednesday during Club Hours and Tuesday were discussed as possible fair days. Final modality (in-person or online) and date will be discussed at the next committee meeting.
    • Members suggested opening the event for other groups to build traffic. Possible groups include Career Services, OAS, student groups, and instructors willing to discuss beneficial volunteer opportunities for specific pathways.
  • Updates from Gisela/Raymond
    • Students will soon have access to a new platform for engagement/ club activities.
