OVERVIEW

In a survey, all members of each Senate Standing Committee had an opportunity to:

Determine whether committee operations as a whole were effective

Indicate whether all Bylaws Charges had been achieved, and enumerate issues that hampered progress

Indicate whether all Steering Committee suggestions had been achieved, and enumerate issues that hampered progress

Indicate whether all committee-generated goals had been achieved, and enumerate issues that hampered progress

Determine whether SC support was adequate, and highlight areas of concern

4 committees cited incomplete Bylaws Charges (21%)

7 committees cited incomplete SC or committee-generated goals (37%)

6 committees indicated that SC guidance needs improvement (31%)

 

DISCUSSION

Several committees indicated that Bylaws Charges updates are needed to streamline committee operations

Several committees indicated need for SC to cement SC designee roles, and strengthen transition process for new officers and members

SC will work to bring number of committees not completing Bylaws Charges down from 21% toward 0%, and dissatisfaction with SC guidance down from 31% toward 0%

2 committees rate themselves as “somewhat effective”:

 

            Budget -- 5-yr enrollment projection requested of President and Executive Enrollment Committee to be compared to 5 year financial plan, request fulfillment in progress

 

            WID/WAC – departmental independence in “certifying” instructors and courses hampers committee’s jurisdiction. Committee and OAA are cooperating with departments to agree that committee findings are advisory

                        Committee should include non-teaching assessment in charges, not just department teaching reports

            Awards and Scholarships

  • Rewrite Bylaws Charges

                        Bylaws Charges do not represent what the committee does, so the following changes are proposed: 1.) Select and recommend to the Academic Senate recipients for College-WIDE awards and scholarships for all currently enrolled students and mid-year graduates. 2.) Change: “Assist departments and coordinate administration of awards and scholarships,” to "Assist the Office of Financial Services and Scholarships in awarding the College-wide scholarships."
