Steering Committee Report November 2020
Even in difficult times, the Standing Committees of the Academic Senate continue their important work. Committee chairs and secretaries met on Wednesday, October 28th for support in meeting committee charges online, committee assessment, and efficiently communicating online all committee actions. Attendance was outstanding, the meeting was videoed to maximize outreach, and Dave Moretti gave generously of his time to instruct in all things technological. Thank you, everyone.
Our students need our support now more than ever. The Counseling Center offers comprehensive online help for students’ emotional health. We encourage you to continue checking in with your students regularly to support their overall wellness.
This is also an extraordinarily stressful time for faculty. We remind you of NYC and Corporate Counseling Associates support services offered on the QCC Faculty homepage and further support offered on Blackboard, and encourage you to reach out to Faculty Governance Leaders or Administration if needed.
In a short time, QCC has transitioned from mostly in-person to virtually entirely online instruction. Students’ voices must be heard in the evaluation of faculty performance; therefore an effective instrument of evaluation is being developed by the Academic Development/Elective Academic Programs Committee of the Academic Senate, using input from faculty and students, and in consultation with the Senate eLearning Committee. Thanks to Rezan Akpinar and Randelle Sasa, chairs respectively of the Academic Development and eLearning Committees for this effort. In the meantime, Academic Development Committee has approved the current PNET Student Evaluation of Faculty Form for temporary immediate use, and the Senate will consider this form during the November meeting.
The Fall 2018 Spring 2019 General Education Assessment Report is included in Agenda materials for Senate information. We thank Ian Beckford for his efforts in leading this assessment and for compiling these useful results.
An updated Faculty Handbook has been posted online in the Faculty Executive Committee section of the college website. An online handbook will be regularly updated and will be maximally transparent and accessible. Thanks to Margot Edlin, chair of FEC and the entire FEC for this significant effort.
Many of us will celebrate Thanksgiving this month. As always, we are thankful to have you all as colleagues and look forward to health and recovery in the not-too-distant future.
