Steering Committee Report November 2022
The Senate’s return to an in-person quorum was a success. We thank all senators for their commitment to returning to increased observance of the Open Meetings Law, and it was energizing to have us gathered together again. We want to give a big thanks to Jesse Pena, Ray Perez, and Mark Chropufka from Academic Computing Center for loaner devices and tech assistance, Brian Farr from IT for making sure WiFi was sufficient, and VP Stephen Di Dio for his work in coordinating many moving parts. No senator required a loaner device, though a few voted by paper ballot. We will continue to make efforts to transition fully to electronic voting.
An in-person quorum is required for the meeting to take place, though we will consider requests by senators, on a meeting by meeting basis, to participate and vote remotely through 2023, as OML at the present time permits it under "extraordinary circumstances." Requests from senators for remote participation for a particular meeting must be made four business days prior to the meeting by emailing [email protected]. All decisions in regard to current OML requirements have been made under the direction of both QCC and CUNY General Counsel with Board of Trustees approval. The pertinent BOT Resolution may be seen here.
We invite any senator who has a question or comment to write to us, and don’t hesitate to drop in to our Mondays 10:00 - 11:00 AM office hour.
We thank again committee officers who have submitted their Annual Reports. At this writing, we await reports from Academic Development, Admissions, Computer Resources, Course and Standing, Committee on Committees, and Publications.
In our ongoing effort to evaluate governance at QCC, we are beginning assessment of governance webpages effectiveness. A survey will be coming in the Spring. In the meantime, take a look at our governance pages and think about what works and what doesn’t. We want information to be thorough, clear, and accessible to observers. To those who work with editing webpages, we want processes to be manageable and simple. Thank you for helping us to do this required assessment. We are also continuing with committee assessment follow-through. In upcoming weeks we will talk with all committees to assure that committee charges align with actual QCC needs. As always, we invite any and all input.
With Thanksgiving later this month comes the beginning of the Holiday Season. We wish everyone the best as we move into a season of reflection and celebration and the all-important second half of the semester.
