 Center for Excellence in Teaching and learning (CETL) 

The Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL) will be hosting presentations during the Spring Student Symposium on Fri, May 3 at 11:00 AM-12:30 PM and 1:15 PM- 2:00 PM in Medical Arts Building-Room M 134. The presentations on High Impact Practices (HIPs) and Open Educational Resources projects will highlight the features of student-centered pedagogy. Faculty who are integrating High Impact Practices (HIPs) in their courses are requested to complete the HIPs designation form so their courses can be designated as HIPs on CUNYfirst. 

All Faculty are encouraged to visit the CETL and OET homepages to see a complete listing of all upcoming events and professional development opportunities.

Update on the Transition to Brightspace

The transition to Brightspace has begun at Queensborough. The new Summer 2024 course shells have been created in Brightspace.

 Brightspace Training

QCC faculty are now enrolled in the Brightspace Resource Course for Instructors. This self-paced training introduces the basics of course building, assignments, and quizzes, as well as resources to get started. Faculty will see the course in the dashboard when logging in at brightspace.cuny.edu using their CUNY Login Credentials. 

Over the spring 2024 semester, CUNY will be offering the following live-webinar style Brightspace Basic Series of Training. Workshops will cover the following topics: Getting Started in Brightspace, ABC’s of Content, Engaging Learners, and Assessing Learning. Faculty are encourage to REGISTER for one or more of the workshops (delivered via Zoom). 

In addition, the Office of Educational Technology (OET) will be offering in-person Brightspace Essentials workshops starting in April. This one-hour introductory workshop will provide essential coverage of the Brightspace Learning Environment for new instructors. Currently, 49 instructors and staff are registered.

Enrollment Management Update

The Office of Academy Advisement continues to advise and register continuing students for the fall 2024 semester. They began new student advising for Fall ‘24 students on Tuesday, April 9. Their efforts this cycle is focusing on promoting early registration, and ensuring our first semester students as well as students on academic probation are required to meet with an adviser. For these students in particular, an advising hold has been placed on their CUNYfirst account before enrollment/registration can take place and have implemented a call campaign to help facilitate students booking an appointment over the phone, ideally before final exams are over. The Office of Academy Advisement also has hosted several events with the Office of Student Success to discuss academic probation and to demonstrate the use of the ScheduleBuilder tool. 

Student Honors/Awards

QCC ASAP student Ms. Manar Elnoor has been selected to participate in the Vassar College Exploring Transfer Program, marking her as the first QCC student to achieve this honor. The Vassar College Exploring Transfer Program, through a five-week residential program and immersion in the liberal arts, enables community college students to imagine a broader range of academic opportunities than might otherwise have been possible. The program is full-time and requires students to be present on campus with no other outside obligations, such as work or online courses. 

Phi Theta Kappa member Ms. Nathalie Reynolds’ work, “My Mother’s Daughter”, will be published in the 29th edition of Nota Bene. The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society received over 1,400 entries this year, and her piece was selected by a national panel of judges. Nota Bene, Latin for “note well,” is Phi Theta Kappa’s honors anthology. It recognizes the outstanding writing and artistry of Phi Theta Kappa members and demonstrates to the creative public the academic excellence and commitment to scholarship found at colleges. The first issue of Nota Bene was published in 1994. It is also worth noting that Ms. Reynolds is a QCC Class of 2024 Eligible Candidate for Graduation. Please join me in congratulating her on this amazing accomplishment! 

Queensborough’s 63rd Annual Commencement Ceremony

Outreach to all QCC Class of 2024 Eligible Candidates for Graduation is in full swing. So far, the Office of Graduation Audit has identified 1,298 eligible students. These students received an email as well as a letter in the mail from Vice President Mitra informing them of their candidacy and inviting them to participate in the May 31 ceremony. If you know of any eligible candidates for graduation who have not received an invitation for this year’s ceremony, instruct them to email [email protected] (include their full-name and EMPL ID#) and someone will respond accordingly. The deadline for graduates to RSVP for this year’s ceremony is Thursday, May 30 at 12:00 pm EST. 

Student Support Resources

• Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to avail themselves of the valuable and free resources through the Advocacy Resource Center. Services provided include public benefits screening, financial coaching, legal assistance, tax preparation services, housing assistance, food pantry referrals, and more.
• Emergency funding is available to students who face a financial crisis that puts at risk their continued enrollment toward their QCC degree. Supported through a grant from The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, the funds provide one-time, emergency grants to students in good standing with short-term financial emergencies to enable them to remain in school, rather than being forced to leave or drop out. Students with short-term financial emergencies should be referred to Ms. Amawati Gonesh, Advocacy Resource Center Program Manager, via email at [email protected]. • The Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and Creativity is not a traditional scholarship focused on rewarding academic achievement and financial need. Its specific goal is to reward and encourage innovative and creative problem solving. The scholarship aims to honor students who excel as creative problem solvers and to help make their higher education goals more accessible. The award amount is $5,000 per year and the deadline to apply is May 15, 2024. Learn more about the Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and Creativity by visiting their website.

• The NYCHA-CUNY (New York City Housing Authority) Resident Scholarship Program is accepting applications. The program is a collaboration of the New York City Housing Authority (“NYCHA”) and the City University New York (“CUNY”) to help low-and moderate-income NYCHA residents attending CUNY colleges, as undergraduates, realize their full potential through higher education. Annually, the scholarship awards $1000 to eligible NYCHA residents who are enrolled at CUNY colleges. The deadline to apply is June 25, 2024.

• The Queensborough Male Resource Center (“QMRC”) is hosting a Murder Mystery Gala on Wednesday, May 8 at 12:00 pm in the Student Union – Upper Level in Room 107. Step into the Roaring 20s at Queensborough Community College's annual MRC Gala of 1925! Get ready for a night of mystery and pizza as we honor the beloved Professor Harper. But when tragedy strikes, YOU become a suspect in "Murder at the MRC Gala." At Eastwood University, join the team in "Hoops Homicide," a college basketball murder mystery. Two thrilling tales of secrets and suspense await!

• The Advocacy Resource Center (ARC) at QCC is working to fight food insecurity on campus on Tuesday, May 14 and again on Tuesday, May 21. ARC will be distributing free fresh fruits, vegetables, and other perishable items as part of CUNY's Fresh Food Bag Program in the Administration Building, 1st Floor (in front of QCC food Pantry) from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.
• Class of 2024 graduates are invited to take sit for their Graduation Portrait. Portraits will be taken on campus beginning Monday, May 6 through Thursday, May 9 from 10:00 am – 5:00 PM in the Student Union Building – Lower Level. There is a $5 sitting fee, payable by cash or check and graduates are asked to dress professionally as this will be their portrait pose in the 2024 Aurora Yearbook. • The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs will host the QCC Class of 2024 Graduation Fair/End of Semester Celebration on Wednesday, May 15 at 12:10 pm in the Humanities Quadrangle. All QCC students are invited to celebrate the end of the spring 2024 semester with free tacos provided by El Toro Rojo Taco Food Truck (while supplies last). Also, an information table will be provided for Class of ‘24 eligible graduation candidates seeking additional information about the May 31 Commencement Ceremony as well as on-the-spot RSVP assistance. A representative from Herff Jones will be present for prospective graduates who wish to order a college ring.
• The CUNY Queens Lavender Graduation Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 24 at 2:00 pm in The Atrium at York College. LGBTQIA+ and ally graduates from Queens-based CUNY institutions (Queens College, York College, Queensborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, and CUNY School of Law) will be honored. A lavender honor chord and certificate will be distributed on stage to all graduates in attendance and, during the reception, framed photos and free rainbow tassels will be available. Registration for this event is required, and the deadline is Friday, May 17, 2024. Graduates with questions about the event should email [email protected].

QCC’s 2nd Annual Sankofa Celebration will take place on Tuesday, May 28 at 12:10 pm in the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC). The ceremony will acknowledge and celebrate the class of 2024 graduates who identify as Black (from the diaspora) or African American (from the United States). Art Gallery

 The Art Gallery will host the “Juried Student Exhibition” in collaboration with the Art Department until June 7, 2024. 

During the spring semester, the Gallery is hosting two students from Flushing International High School, one from Bayside High School, and 5 interns from the QCC Art and Design Department. 

 

Kupferberg Holocaust Center 

SPRING 2024 EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS SUMMARY:

• The KHC continued to welcome QCC classes for in-person tours of the Concentration Camps exhibit this semester, as well as thematic presentations including those on the history of the Holocaust, medical ethics, and curatorial practices. These visits were for 24 classes, in 8 academic departments, impacting 522 students. 

• The 8 academic departments included: English; Philosophy; History; Art & Design; Psychology; Criminal Justice; Adult Literacy, and Communication, Theatre, & Media Production 

• The KHC hosted 2 Professional Development workshops for QCC faculty, CUNY staff and educators in our community impacting over 110 educators and administrative staff as follows: 

• • “Understanding Antisemitism: Past and Present” facilitated by Facing History and Ourselves staff in Partnership with the QCC Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center; Equity at Queensborough; and CUNY Central. This workshop was for Diversity Officers throughout CUNY. 

• • “Pedagogical Strategies: Making History Visible in the Classroom” part of the KHC/NEH 2023-24 Colloquium and in partnership with CETL on April 17, 2024.

 

SPRING 2024 PROGRAMMING SUMMARY:

• During the Spring 2024 academic semester, the KHC presented 13 public programs including lectures, panel discussions, performances, and special commemorative events.

 

• The KHC continued 2 thematic program initiatives this semester, Human Rights, and the Museum series and the KHC/NEH 2022-23 Colloquium – Trauma, Remembrance and Compassion.

 

• A new collaboration was launched between the KHC and the QCC-CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortiumin a semester-long project entitled “Performance as Prevention.” There were 7 events as part of the partnership.

 

• The partnership led to the creation of a new video playlist “Centering LGBTQIA+ Voices: https://tinyurl.com/48wdjnpb

 

• The Center was honored to have partnerships with 10 outside institutions who focus on the Holocaust and other human rights issues, including: the Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy at the University of Nebraska at Omaha; the Center for the Study of Genocide & Human Rights at Rutgers University; the Holocaust, Genocide, and Interfaith Education Center at Manhattan College; and the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center.

 

• There were 8 QCC partnerships including the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), QPAC, the Ally LGBTQIA+ Club; the LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Association, and the departments of Art & Design, and Theater, as well as 3 CUNY partnerships including the Museum MA Program at the CUNY School of Professional Studies, The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, and CUNY Central.

 

• Public programs ranged from our International Holocaust Remembrance Day Virtual Commemoration with keynote speaker Diane Afoumado, Chief of the Holocaust Survivors and Victims Resource Center at the United Holocaust Memorial Museum, whose presentation was entitled: “The Evian Conference & the Refugee Crisis: 85 Years Later.” The event had 215 registrants, was co-sponsored by 5 Holocaust institutions in the greater NYC area, to our continued partnership with Anne Frank Center USA for a special live performance of their original play of the Letters from Anne and Martin. The play featured excerpts from Anne Frank’s diary and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” The event was held in QPAC and had 130 attendees.

2023-2024 KHC-NEH COLLOQUIUM:

Weaponizing the Past: Art, History, and the Rhetoric of National Greatness

With neofascist movements currently on the rise across the world, this series looks back on the history of fascism in the twentieth century, with particular focus on the way in which an aestheticized national imaginary was used as the guiding rhetoric of the Nazi party. Our speaker series collectively seeks to explore how the Nazi party and other radical movements have utilized the fetishization of the past to violently erase those out of compliance with their retroactive national norm. Organized in dialogue with contemporary issues, the series is aligned with the current KHC exhibit, The Concentration Camps: Inside the Nazi System of Incarceration and Genocide.

The KHC continues to offer self-guided audio tours of its original exhibition which surveys the scope and brutality of the Nazi system of incarceration and genocide, underscoring the horrific consequences of antisemitism, racism, and authoritarianism. In addition to the exhibit’s text, images, and artifacts, personal testimonies from local Holocaust survivors offer painful insights into these excruciating landscapes of degradation and dehumanization. This exhibit is curated by Dr. Cary Lane, KHC 2020-21 Curator-in-Residence and Associate Professor of English at QCC.

Singing professionally, Richie has covered many different artists such as Frank Sinatra, Frankie Vali, Andrea Bocelli, Journey, Aerosmith, AC DC, Al Green, Michael Bublè, Bon Jovi, and the list goes on and on. Although covering these artists is exciting, no performer has influenced Richie quite like the "KING." Elvis is the reason Richie became an entertainer and WHY he is still going strong today! The last 12 years have been exciting as Richie pursued his career as an Elvis Tribute Artist. Being the same height and weight as Elvis in his prime makes his show an even more believable experience. Add the power of Richie's voice and the transformation is complete.
