List of Bylaws charges and notation of “completed” or “not completed” with reasoning for incomplete items

  • Oversee and make recommendations to the Academic Senate related to the WID/WAC Program
    • The Committee edited the Bylaws to include a provision about student member involvement. The line was edited as follows:
      • The Committee on WID/WAC shall consist of the director or one co-director of the WID/WAC Program, nine (9) faculty members from different departments who have participated in WID/WAC professional development and one (1) student member who shall participate and vote only on matters of policy.
  • Review and recommend changes in the criteria for a writing intensive (WI) class to the Academic Senate for its approval.
    • No recommendations were discussed during this academic year.
  • Oversee a continuing WID/WAC Faculty Professional Development Program with the Office of Academic Affairs
    • Writing Intensive HIP Co-Coordinators Melissa Dennihy and Monica Rossi-Miller trained twelve (12) faculty during the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Hear and decide student cases requesting a waiver from any WI degree requirements.
    • The Committee considered WI course waiver requests from six (6) students for nine (9) courses total. After careful review of each petition, three (3) course waivers were approved, and six (6) course waivers were denied.
    • In conversation with OAA, the Committee revised the student WI waiver request form for the coming academic year.
      • The revised form will be posted to the QCC website, likely on OAA and/or Registrar site.
  • Provide a list of current WI-certified classes and the instructors certified to teach WI classes to the department chairs who will make the final decision on the designation of a course or section as WI each semester.
    • The list of current WI-certified instructors will be provided to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and the incoming WIDWAC Chair at the end of the Spring 2023 semester.
  • Guarantee, through a certification and recertification process, that all classes designated as WI meet the criteria for a WI class.
    • During the 2022-2023 Academic Year, the committee reviewed submissions from 15 faculty members wishing to participate in the committee’s ongoing recertification initiative.
      • 2022-2023 recertification update:
        • Requests: 50 active faculty
        • Recertified: 13 faculty
        • Denied/Requested revisions: 2 faculty
    • Based on current data, the total active faculty recertification numbers to-date are:
      • Total active certified at QCC: 396
      • Recertification active faculty requests sent: 229
      • Approved active faculty recertified: 74
      • Denied/Requested revisions: 17
      • Still need to request active faculty recertification: 166
      • Note: these numbers do not include faculty who are inactive, have left the college, no longer teach WI, or who do not have a QCC email address in the directory.
  • Provide OAA a list of faculty members participating in the WIDWAC program.
    • Names added to the Excel spreadsheet, which is provided to OAA and maintained by the current WIDWAC Committee Chair.

List of Steering Committee charges and notation of “completed” or “not completed” with reasoning for incomplete items

  • Maintain a complete document (Excel) containing the names of all WI certified employees, indicating when members have been invited to participate in recertification along with the outcomes. (completed)
    • Find undergraduate representation to serve on the committee (completed)
    • The committee agrees that it is increasingly challenging to locate students who have the time and desire to serve.
    • Two names were identified; neither attended meetings.
  • Update the Academic Senate Steering Committee’s Committee Guide for the WIDWAC (completed)
    • The 2022-2023 Academic Year Committee Chair started this document, and future Committee Chairs should continue editing the document as needed.
    • It should be posted to the Committee website in the coming academic year.

Summary of actions not covered by above

  • Unresolved question regarding recertification:
    • The committee has hesitated to make this decision until all current faculty are recertified; the committee charge should continue to be updated to include this information until such a decision has been reached.
      • Once a faculty member is approved for recertification, how much time should pass before they are once again asked to participate?
  • Revised the Student Waiver request form

Committee recommendations for upcoming year

  • Continue requesting WI recertifications from QCC WI-certified employees
    • The current committee suggests that this request continue to be sent by OAA.
  • Discuss what other CUNY institutions do when non-certified or non-recertified faculty teach Writing Intensive courses.
  • Discuss possibility of WIDWAC statement to Administration or Academic Senate regarding faculty recertification.
  • Request recertification of faculty who did not submit the first time, since the beginning of the project.
  • Ask Administration (i.e., Department Chairs) to check the list of certified faculty members and verify faculty who are/are not still at the college, so that WIDWAC can update the spreadsheet.
