Course Description in college catalog:

This course continues to build the skills needed to design, build and maintain small to medium networks. Students will learn how to startup and configure network routers and utilize the OSI model in troubleshooting router configurations. Topics include: WANs and routers, basic network testing, router startup and setup, router configuration, IOS images, TCP/IP, IP addressing and subnetting, routing protocols. Students will learn about security issues and vulnerabilities in network communications. Lab activities will complement lecture topics.

To analyze the operation of an IP Data Networks

Students should be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the OSI and TCP/IP models.
  • Recognize the purpose and functions of various network devices such as Routers, Switches, Bridges and Hubs.
Demonstrate knowledge IPv4 and IPv6 addressing. To implement subnetting effectively.
  • Student will be able to implement VLSM and Summarization on a network.
  • To Configure, verify, and troubleshoot IPv4 addressing problems.
  • Describe the operation and necessity of using private and public IP addresses for IPv4 addressing
  • Students will be able to identify IPv6 addressing scheme and to differential IPv6 address types.
To introduce students to Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS). Students will be able to use the CLI interface to master skills in router and switching configurations.
  • Students Configure and verify initial switch configuration including remote access management.
  • Cisco IOS commands to perform basic switch setup

Students will be able to describe basic routing concepts and IP routing Technologies.
  • Describe basic routing concepts, protocol such as RIP, EIGRP,BGP OSPF
  • Configure and verify routing configuration for a static or default route given specific routing
  • Differentiate methods of routing and routing protocols, Internetworking Technologies, Frame Relay, ATM and MPLS.
  • Student will be familiar with Cloud computing technologies.
Students will be familiar with Layer 2 Switching concepts as well as VLANs routing protocols.
  • Configure and verify initial switch configuration including remote access management.
  • Verify network status and switch operation using basic utilities such as ping,telnet and ssh.
