The Academic Senate Committee on Awards and Scholarships met on June 10, 2020, 12:00 PM via WebEx

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 PM
Selection of the recipients for the following Special Awards:
The committee members had reviewed all the applications prior to the meeting. They compared notes and discussed their nominees for each award. Awardees were decided by simple majority. Awards are listed as in the order they were reviewed.
John F. Kennedy Award
Discussion
This award is given to one student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the college and community. During the meeting the possibility of two students sharing this award was brought up.
Decision
Out of 8 applicants, the committee decided to recommend sharing this year’s JFK Award between Biling Chen and Diane Cadena, which is subject to further approval by QCC President Dr. Timothy Lynch.
Martin Luther King Jr. Award
Discussion
This award is given to one student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting racial harmony and appreciation of cultural diversity. During the meeting the possibility of two students sharing this award was brought up.
Decision
Out of 4 applicants, the committee decided to recommend sharing this year’s MLK Award between Joseph Distl and Melika Mothena, which is subject to further approval by QCC President Dr. Timothy Lynch.
Updates on Merits Scholarship Application Description
Discussion
Benjamin Miller and Wei Lai shared a new draft about updating essay description for student merit scholarship application to guide our students to improve their writing.
Decision
The committee thanked Benjamin and Wei for their contribution and provided some feedbacks. An updated draft will be sent to the whole committee by email for final vote in summer 2020 before its implementation in fall 2020 semester.
Discussion
Anissa Moody’s term is expiring and thus the committee thanked Anissa Moody for her service to the committee.
