The Academic Senate Committee on Awards and Scholarships met on May 13, 2021, 10:00 AM via Zoom

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 12:00 PM

Introductions

Discussion

The agenda was distributed by Ewa Stelmach before the meeting via email.

The minutes of December 16, 2020 were reviewed.

Decision

The minutes were approved for posting.

 

Incoming members: Stephen Atkins, Accelerated Study in Associate Programs; Ari Fulton, Speech Communications

Continuing members: Ewa Stelmach, Mathematics & Computer Science; Wei Lai, Foreign Languages and Literatures; Alfred McDonald Jr., Business; Mary Ann Rosa, Nursing

Outgoing members: Benjamin Miller, Foreign Languages and Literatures; Sujun Wei, Chemistry

Ewa Stelmach thanked the outgoing members for their superior service and commitment to the committee.

 

Election of Chair and Secretary

Postponed due to not all members with voting rights being present.

Review of Merit Scholarship

Postponed as not all voting sheets have been received from all members. Ewa Stelmach reminded all present members and also sent a follow up email to all member that such a situation is not acceptable. All members need to submit their voting sheet in a timely matter prior to the meeting.

The new Guide for all Standing Committee of the Academic Senate and online addendum for ASC

All members need to review the general guide for all standing committees posted online before next meeting.

Committee Assessment Form

The committee worked together on the assessment form and Ewa Stelmach will prepare the final copy and submit it to the Steering Committee.

Selection of the recipients for the following Special Awards:

The committee members had reviewed all the applications prior to the meeting. They compared notes and discussed their nominees for each award. Awardees were decided by simple majority. Awards are listed as the order they were reviewed.

John F. Kennedy Award

Discussion

This award is given to one student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the college and community.

Decision

The committee decided to recommend this year’s JFK Award to Arnab Sharma.

 

Martin Luther King Jr. Award

Discussion

This award is given to one student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting racial harmony and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Decision

The committee decided to recommend this year’s MLK Award to Shamiah Waker.

 

Incentive Awards: Day and Evening Students

Discussion

This award is given to day and night students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and also are working parents.

There were two recipients for each award.

Decision

Day award: Mayra Wanderley and Natascha Kaltenegger-Stingone

Evening award: Sandra Smith and Naima Ayub.

 

Ray Rickets Award

Discussion

This award is given to one returning student who exhibits exceptional scholarship and leadership.

Decision

Ray Rickets Award: Nevada Caldwell.
